What I'm about to share will challenge us to look beyond the headlines of #kcse2019results and ask the more profound questions. The promise of quality education is made, but how well are we delivering it to the next generation? @kikiwemo @wmnjoya @RookieKE @creckbuyonge (1/12)
According to the recently released #kcseresults2019, the majority of students attend sub-county schools. However, our newspapers and dialogue are flooded with stories and concerns of the 4%. Is this where the airtime should go? @KogaloPundit @misskim_kay @Rita_Oyier (2/12)
@KogaloPundit @misskim_kay @Rita_Oyier Advantage builds more advantage. If you went to a national school, 2 out of 3 of your classmates are going to university. If you went to a sub-county school, only 9% of your schoolmates will attend university in 2020. @Rita_Oyier @RookieKE @Cliff_Otieno #KCSEresults2019 (3/12)
@KogaloPundit @misskim_kay @Rita_Oyier @RookieKE @Cliff_Otieno (4/12) We need to stop focussing on #halftheKCSEstory. By picking only top/individual stories, we miss the big picture of #KCSE2019. We should be asking about the majority of the students- not the minority.

Who takes up space the 'A' and 'A-' category? National schools and extra county schools. They also 'lead the race for top varsity courses'. A child outside the 'A-mainstream' has a lower probability of entering the 'A-list'. (5/12) @kikiwemo @wmnjoya @Rita_Oyier @RookieKE
(6/12) Students attaining "A" grades are 0.9% of the entire class of 2019 candidates. Why do we give this group's news most of the airtime? #kcseresults2019 @dailynation @JimmyShigi @davemutegi @wmnjoya @CGathuru @pwameyo @PeopleDailyKe @StandardMediaKe
(7/12)Under-investment: the same way you know which schools produce the majority of A students, you can also tell which schools are likely to have students receive D grades: Subcounty @kylieachieng @wk_annie @wmnjoya @kikiwemo @CGathuru @Sharon_Baranga @GShapersNairobi @RookieKE

Two new peer groups are produced- and the look very different. The 'varsity' group is mostly national and extra-county students. The 'TVET' group is mostly county & sub-county students. @kylieachieng @FinchDenny @kikiwemo @wmnjoya

@kylieachieng @wk_annie @wmnjoya @kikiwemo @CGathuru @Sharon_Baranga @GShapersNairobi @RookieKE @FinchDenny (9/12) Representation matters. Students from 'top' schools are over-represented at the top (going to uni). Students from 'other' schools are disproportionately represented at the bottom and are going to underresourced TVETs. Are some students more equal than others? @wmnjoya
@kylieachieng @wk_annie @wmnjoya @kikiwemo @CGathuru @Sharon_Baranga @GShapersNairobi @RookieKE @FinchDenny @Pacekenya @KogaloPundit @BrysonMwamburi @Misskihoro @Rita_Oyier @creckbuyonge @CREAWKenya @surambaya (10/12) Motivational talks/stories are not enough. To break the inequity in our system, we must have intentional national resource allocation to schools that serve the majority. Give your wisdom, wealth, work and networks to schools. @kikiwemo @wmnjoya @csayosays @kenyanpundit

Our system creates a real disadvantage for students from 'other' schools. We should worry when the national conversation only focuses on the 1%. @Pacekenya @kikiwemo @alexawiti @wmnjoya @RookieKE @PeopleDailyKe @CGathuru @mwichigik

If you’re from a sub-county school, you meet students who already know each other from their national & extra-country backgrounds. More psychosocial support can help students with less social safety nets to thrive. @Pacekenya
@KogaloPundit @misskim_kay @Rita_Oyier @RookieKE @Cliff_Otieno The #kcseresults2019 conversation is about more than just university entry. It is about who accesses the jobs & the opportunity to lead Kenya. The grades of kids in county & sub-county school prevent them from ever qualifying to be a governor @wmnjoya @kylieachieng @KogaloPundit
