I just got off the phone with Giuliani, who called again. He claims he’s now read the story and thought it was unfair, and that he fell into the wall because he has a bad knee. He said he shouldn’t talk to me and that he’s going to the opera tonight. “Merry Christmas,” he said.
I try to prevent my subject from being surprised by what I write. And I would never write anything that I wouldn’t say to my subject’s face. Those are my rules. But usually I find that if a subject is angry about how they’re portrayed, they are severely lacking self awareness.
Most people don’t get angry. But of course sometimes they do, and I feel terrible when they do, even if I know I was fair. It can feel terrible to tell the truth about someone no matter how important telling the truth about them is. It’s not natural.
