How can someone urge that governments gut funding from speech it dislikes without acknowledging 1st amendment problems? Or praise Hungary's approach to higher ed that drove an entire university to leave? The goal is a fascistic control of higher ed. 1/

For some conservatives, Hungary is the model of government control higher education to aspire to. To be blunt, it is the government taking partisan and ideological control of campus with no respect for free speech or academic freedom 2/
There are conservatives who sincerely care about campus speech. And there are those who see campuses as ideological opponents to be dismantled or controlled. The two views are incompatible, although the latter are drawing talking points from the former to gain broader appeal. 3/
If Hungary is your model, the mask drops. Orban offers no pretense in believing in free speech on campus or in the press. All public and private institutions are being brought under “national conservative” ideological control. It is a fascist mindset, not a conservative one. 4/
