On Sunday, I walked across the Gateway International Bridge into Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico to meet with asylum seekers. I witnessed both the cruelty of our policy and the grace of acts of kindness.
Congressman Filemón Vela and I joined Team Brownsville and Sister Norma of Catholic Charities for a holiday Tamalada with the thousands of asylum seekers living in mud and tents by the U.S. border.
I’ve witnessed the pain of refugees around the world, but seeing it at our own border felt like a betrayal. My grandfather was once welcomed here from Italy, but today, we are turning away families who only want to give their children a life free of violence.
What I saw firsthand was heartbreaking but the stories I heard from the women and children trying to survive was worse. This cruelty is not who we are.
Our nation was mostly built by immigrants and when we turn our backs on these families, it’s a stain on our national character. We cannot let this happen in our name.
Still, I’m heartened by the volunteers and NGOs like Team Brownsville, @AngriaTiasRGV, and @GRM_Global who serve meals and provide humanitarian and medical assistance to the families and children. They have not left the call to justice unanswered.
Especially over the holidays, the stories of these families will remain with me. These mothers will be in my prayers.
