MY CHRISTMAS NOTE: MESSAGE OF PEACE; AVOIDING RELIGIOUS CONFLICTS

It is no doubt that every religious conflict recorded in Nigeria is borne out of one provocation or another. Avoiding such provocations, especially between Muslims & Christians is a giant step towards peaceful

coexistence. I find this advice by Late Sheikh Jaafar Mahmood Adam (RH) very appropriate.

A Clarion call to Nigerian Christians, whom Allah (God) Has created us together in the same country to, rather than focus on attacking everything ISLAM, ponder on their own book (Bible).

To holistically study the Bible, teach people the true life of Jesus (Peace of Allah Be upon him). For the priests and Pastors to concentrate on teaching Christians the essence of religion, respect for God & His teachings, avoiding confrontations with others on issues that do not

in any way concern them - not teach hatred & stir unnecessary ripples among the people across ethnicity & religion. As Muslims, one cannot be a Muslim if he disrespects any of the Messengers of Allah, Jesus inclusive. This makes Islam more elaborate & tolerant than any religion.

Bu the fact remains that, Christian Missionaries that brought Christianity to Nigeria decided to plant a non-existent hatred in the hearts of Christians, especially where they exist as minorities, for instance in some places in Northern Nigeria. This, to DIVIDE & RULE.

They targeted the minority tribes, that might have been wronged in the past by the majority tribes in history. They took advantage of that, to pump hatred & divide us sharply along ethnoreligious lines. Assuming such wrongdoings have happened in the past? How is it the fault of

those living in the present? Were those wrongdoings preached by Islam, or they were as a result of the wickedness of man, as a man? Absolutely not preached by Islam, as this same attitude of man obtains everywhere in history where the strong oppress the weak.

Thus, oppression is more of a human attitude that can only be eradicated by religious teachings. Thus, the source of that hatred preached from generation to generation is unfounded and destructive. Whatever efforts we think we can put to eradicate one another is useless.

Therefore, for peaceful coexistence, we need to bring ourselves to terms with the realities of our situations as a country. LIVE AND LET LIVE. Practice your religion, and allow everyone to practice his or her own religion. This is the only way we can live in peace among us.

We must accept the realities of our current situation. God Has created us together in one country. Apply whatever violence you think you have, you can't wipe one another from this country called Nigeria. As Muslims, we have a call, to invite people to Islam & it stops there.

We do not decide who becomes a Muslim or what someone chooses to worship. Just as praying, fasting, going to Hajj is an obligation (each with its conditions), so is calling people to Islam an obligation with its conditions too. But that doesn't open room for disrespecting each

others' religious beliefs. We can actually live together in peace and harmony when we avoid interfering with each other's affairs or at least respect each others' rights to worship and practice whatever one chooses to. It is a simple message, but purposeful.
