To join SFWA, "Qualifying works must be in the English language in science fiction, fantasy, horror and *related genres.*"

Romance writers are our cousins.

Ghost? = fantasy or horror trope
Premonition? = fantasy trope
Scientific discovery = SF
Romance and SFF are related genres.

Not always closely related, I'll grant, but in the ways in which we are shunned by "literature?" Absolutely. We have a lot of common ground relating to publishing, both trad and indie.
As president of SFWA, please accept my invitation to consider our organization if you feel your work has a kinship with SFF, even a tenuous tie.

sfwa.org
"The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) is a professional writers' organization focused on science fiction, fantasy, horror and related genres — the literary landscapes of the future and of the imagination...
"As such, it is strengthened by diversity in its members and their fiction. In representing the common interests of all authors, SFWA embraces writers of every background and the unique perspective each member brings to the organization...
"SFWA therefore does not discriminate against indiv. on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender id., religion, disability, age, veteran status, ancestry, or nat. or ethnic origin & actively encourages writers from under-represented groups to apply..."
The tl:dr version.

Addendum of FAQ:

Q: I'm not published yet, can I join?
A: No, but we have programs to help early-career writers without requiring a membership. These include grants, Writer Beware, and mentor programs.

Q: I'm indie. Can I join SFWA?
A: You are welcome. The qualification process is a little involved, but we have a questionnaire to help you decide before filling out the application.

Q: My publisher isn't on your qualifying market list.
A: They don't need to be. Those are already vetted markets but we have always been willing to approve publishers on an individual basis.
Q: My work has [time travel/reincarnation/werewolves/alternate history] does it count?
A: Yes/yes/yes/yes
Q: Why are the membership criteria set at [x]?
A: SFWA was formed to provide support for professional SFF authors. The membership criteria are calibrated to be roughly the same for our indie as for our trad authors.

We revisit these on a regular basis as the industry evolves.
