It’s just so fundamentally either dumb or cruel: “No, I’d prefer a system that hides relevant information from people — presumed innocent — who are facing criminal charges.”

Why would anyone *want* to live in that system?

As 2009 ended, I had no full-time job—but blogged and got two freelance pieces published in DC’s Metro Weekly before the year’s end.

In 2019, I wrote for BuzzFeed, now work on criminal justice at The Justice Collaborative & published in The Appeal—and had two pieces in the NYT.
As 2009 ended, my drinking was out of control, as I said I had no full-time job, and I was staying with friends.

As 2019 ends, I’m nine-and-a-half years sober, I have a full-time job plus plenty else to do, and I love living by myself in my lovely apartment.
As 2009 ended, I was letting my health go in every way, from my drinking to my physical heath to my mental health.

As 2019 ends, I’m sober, have a great therapist, exercise often, and actually care about taking care of my body, soul, and mind. And am happy about all of it.

A life second to none. Full of gratitude for this gift of sobriety that I have been given — and for all of the people who help me get through each new day, including these two, my perfect nephews, who make everything a little brighter and more hopeful. 🥰
And, of course, unending thanks goes to Mommy, who’s been there for everything — from the beginning. ❤️ I don’t know how I’ve been so blessed to live the life that I get to live, but I know that without her love and lessons it wouldn’t be possible. (I’m 5 days old on the left.)
After a week away, though, it did feel good to get back to DC tonight — back to the gym and then a wonderful, impromptu discussion with a dear friend about life and what we want from 2020. What a gift! 🙏

What is clear: #SanDiego is full of ambitious politicians who change party, office and/or districts to stay in/run for office.

They changed their party registration then worked against #progressives when they run against #moderates. Women of color were especially impacted by moderate party policies & actions in 2018
3/ @sandiegodems used "member communication" $ to attack @CD4Monica @vivianmorenoSD in their elections

Both women won- despite institutional #Democrat opposition. Hopefully this teaches local Democrats about the power & need for #diversity & representation in #SanDiego politics

Republican Never-Trumpers like @SykesCharlie face a peculiar conundrum. Their own constituency is quite small, as the 2016 GOP primaries and Republicans’ subsequent embrace of Trump made clear. Yet their public profile is pretty high. Who, then, do they speak for?
2. @SykesCharlie isn’t wrong to say there are ways Democratic candidates could alienate groups of voters. Some of them — like demanding abolition of private health insurance — are important to voters a Democratic Presidential candidate might hope to get, & therefore are risky.
3. But among the items on Sykes’ list are some that speak to conventional Republican priorities, unchanged since the Bush administration. Do nothing about gun crime, or alienate gun owners; spend nothing more on “free stuff” for “those people,” or alienate voters who already...

#Actually, the chart actually shows clear evidence of the beer-wine frontier, with certain types of sprits (e.g. scotch, brandy/cognac) straddling the frontier. 🍺🍷
A few highbrow beers (although there's nothing *truly* highbrow on here) creep over into wineland, but that's sort of what you'd expect.
