Worth examining the insidious hair-splitting subtext to this tweet: That it's understandable (natural, even!) to have racist views, and that's not a problem unless you a put on a hood and start burning crosses.
Like the Brett Stephens essay, a lot of Quillette's recent oeuvre seeks to mainstream the idea of drawing meaningful conclusions about race from IQ. It's the sinister faux-scientific foundation for a certain species of aristocratic racism.
It's an erudite respectable racism, as contrasted with the vulgar zoomer 4chan racism which has become so prevalent among the #MAGA set.
It's somewhat divorced from partisanship. Quillette hopes to include college-educated centrists in its audience. It pitches an iconoclastic "race realism" which allows its readers to feel more sophisticated than the hysterics of Richard Spencer while still retaining their biases.
And so Quillette readers aren't burning crosses. But this audience of professionals are providing unequal medical care, unequal employment conditions, and unequal educational opportunities, all informed by an erroneous intellectual bias that typically plays out subconsciously.
