Spoke recently w/a company

120 developers/designers

In mid-‘19 they had 16 PdMs, 2 directors of prod, and 1 head of product

...and they dropped that to one head of product, 3 prod coaches, 2 prod ops, and hired more UX, UXR, data science

For now, it is working.

Why (1/3)
...in their words

“over the years, teams had demonstrated they could run with missions. In reality, this is one product not 16. UX and eng leads together made great working partners. And in all honesty, we weren’t offering good career progression for our PMs” (2/3)
My observation. The product coaches could work on spreading product thinking everywhere. They focused on up-skill ing.

Product ops helped information and data flow. And UX, UXR, and Data Science improved overall decision quality (3/3)
