Only 6 days into 2020 and I am ready to announce 'disappointment of the year' award. And it goes to the @FinancialTimes. One of the most respectable newspapers in the world published a cringingly servile interview with an international mafia boss Usmanov. Spoiler: they loved him.
@FinancialTimes I don't even know where to start. Usmanov simply repeated all the lies about the origin of his wealth, about how he is not an oligarch (what?),and how he has never privatised any state assets. In 2017 we spent a long time looking into this and debunked every single claim he makes
@FinancialTimes We provided documents from the UK official registers proving that Usmanov's money come from a huge scam that he ran using a UK company he secretly owned in the 90s. Does a British newspaper have any interest in that? No. Let's do more vodka shots instead!
@FinancialTimes Usmanov almost never gives interviews, so you gonna think that a decent journalist would jump on a chance to ask him some questions that have never been publicly asked before. And yet there is nothing, not a single question that would make Usmanov even slightly uncomfortable.
@FinancialTimes How about that brilliant story when a deputy prime minister Shuvalov gave a $50m loan to Usmanov and got paid back $119m? What an interesting subject to discuss, isn't it? It is not, apparently. Not according to the @FinancialTimes. Not a mention. barrons.com/articles/SB500…
@FinancialTimes And I am very sorry to sound rude, but if the interviewer (the head of FT's Moscow bureau btw) had any clue about the Russian politics, he would know that there is ONE topic that interests more than 30 million people. It's this. The $170m estate GIFTED by Usmanov to Medvedev.
@FinancialTimes I cannot get over the fact that this wasn't raised. It's like a herd of elephants in the room. Clear and unquestionable documents showing that Usmanov has bribed the prime minister of Russia. And Medvedev isn't mentioned once. This is just embarrassing, dear @FinancialTimes
@FinancialTimes This interview feels like a press release from the Usmanov's PR team. Kindly printed and packaged by @FinancialTimes . He used the newspaper to get out a completely made up story. And, of course, to praise Putin repeatedly. Thanks, FT. At least you got a nice lunch out of it.
@FinancialTimes I feel genuinely sorry for the FT readers who come across this deceiving piece of 'journalism'. If you want to know anything about Usmanov, throw this article away and have a look at our investigation instead (English subtitles available).
@FinancialTimes Dear @khalafroula @lionelbarber @hallbenjamin @AlecuRussell Usmanov’s interview has nothing to do with journalism. It’s full of twisted facts and omissions. Doesn’t matter whether this has been done on purpose or it’s just your correspondent
@FinancialTimes @khalafroula @lionelbarber @hallbenjamin @AlecuRussell who’s ready to swallow whatever lies Usmanov tells him. Either way this is done at the expense of your readers. I hope you ll have some decency to recall this very poor and very damaging material.
