This morning on @RNBreakfast, Craig Kelly repeated the false claim (first made by the PM) that Australia ranks 1st globally per capita on renewable energy investment, which is both misleading and incorrect. #AustraliaIsBurning #auspol

@RNBreakfast 2/ Looking at just the year 2018, the Department of Energy admits Australia is actually only second -- not first -- when it comes to 2018 renewable energy investment per capita, among a select group of 30 countries, not the whole world.
@RNBreakfast 3/ The data excludes small island states with small populations and high renewable energy investments, such as Tuvalu which are much more likely to top a true global per capita list than Australia
@RNBreakfast 4/ This data also shows that across the last decade, Australia comes in at just 5th for clean energy investment per capita among a select group of 23 countries
@RNBreakfast 5/ Australia ranks even further down the list in terms of investment per GDP, and ranks 19th in terms of total installed renewable capacity.

Australia is literally on fire but, I suspect, it will still move at glacial pace on climate change. We hope people "wake up" but many won't.

Why? Because I think most campaigners speak with leftist language than to/with middle-of-the-road voters.

So they ignore us.
The right can say they'll invest to ensure Australians will be protected from climate change.

If they don't trust us or connect with us, they will buy that message over a 'radical' left wing message.

And the fires will continue and climate change will get worse.
I'll be blunt. We can tackle climate change without socialism.

There are tons of market based solutions (transport electrification infrastructure, renewable energy investment, carbon trading).
But politicians rarely debate them because it's either 'eco socialism' or denial.

Last year I came up with a #Renewable Exports typology.

I reckon there are six main types of exports.

1. Direct electricity transfer via undersea cables, like the SunCable proposal to export power to Singapore afr.com/companies/ener…
2. Clean hydrogen-based fuel, using #renewable electricity to electrolyze water. Renewable hydrogen can then be turned into other chemicals like ammonia, which can be transported more easily and safely at scale.

OFGEM - the UK Government's energy regulator - are the biggest obstacle to making full use of #Scotland's #renewable #energy resources.

Energy policy is reserved to the UK Government, so there's absolutely nothing the Scottish Government can do about #Ofgem.

Here's a BBC article where Ofgem have supposedly given the "green light" for the first ever grid connection to Shetland.

(Believe it or not, we're in 2019 and the UK has never bothered to connect #Shetland to the National Grid.)

Unfortunately, approval for the grid connection to Shetland is conditional on the UK Government funding a wind farm project there, which will in turn be conditional on being able to transmit power to the National Grid.

Steve Catanach, Director of Climate Initiatives: Muni is mostly related to cleaning up our grid and getting away from fossil fuels. But it can also allow us to do some more innovative things than are currently allowed under Xcel.

Hi guys! @AtteHarjanne and me just published a paper "Abandoning the concept of #renewable #energy" at Energy Policy. In it, we argue that the concept of #renewableenergy (RE) is outdated. 1/

What we argue here is that using what is basically a 1970s-era definition of renewable energy, and conflating "renewable" with "sustainable" or even "clean," is becoming more a hindrance than a help in meeting the main challenge of the early 2000s - #climatechange . 2/
We argue that the concept of RE was largely set in stone well before the magnitude of #climate challenge, and actual problems with some sources that are technically renewable, was understood. This has resulted to, e.g., using the "renewable" label to cover all bioenergy. 3/
