The Minister for Energy and Emission Reductions today announced a taskforce that could see the Liddell coal fired power station open for longer, including through taxpayer money.

Liddell is the oldest power station in Australia. It predates colour tv, and keeps breaking down.

In 2018 Liddell units broke down or dropped out 11 times without notice -- more than any other coal power station in NSW. #auspol #gasandcoalwatch

The Minister is misleading to compare Liddell to Hazelwood.

Hazelwood was shut down with little notice. That was due to the chaos in energy policy.

Liddell’s closure was flagged far in advance and there are many cleaner replacements on the table. #auspol

THREAD! So, in a debate with @CJPomfret &@TheAusInstitute's @RDNS_TAI, I was asked to make a case that wind energy is likely more expensive than nuclear, if they have to deliver the same service. Here's a fun walk-through with rough calculations from my beautiful homeland!
Before focusing on wind, let's look at the big picture power for generation in Aus, right now! Just to get us in the mood, note that the mean wind has sort of died currently and the sun has set (red). So you'd need storage if you didn't have fossils (blue).
To give us an idea what wind is like, here's last month. It's the total over all of Australia. As you can see, it hovers around 2 GW of energy. For comparison, that's about what one biggish nuclear or coal power station makes. But coal sucks balls so we're talking nuclear today.

Why? 🇨🇳 is moving to decarbonise & transition its economy as fast as it can. China is the world's biggest producer, consumer & importer of coal. But China's coal consumption peaked in 2014. 🇨🇳 will probably cease thermal coal imports medium term, relying on their domestic mines.
China just announced a 21GW subsidy free wind & #solar tender, for construction completion by next year. Grid parity for renewables in China by 2020. That is well ahead of target. Zero pollution, zero emissions domestic production. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… by Feifei Shen @business

Enoch Godongwana's comments last night on using prescribed assets to force banks to finance coal is very concerning. It indicates a misunderstanding of how banks work and lack of appreciation of the +ve role funding decisions make in driving market discipline. A thread 1/13
Banks are intermediaries. They sit in between savers (funders) and borrowers. Funders have significant influences over banks because they will withhold funds from banks that do not meet desired criteria. 2/13
Funders have used their influence to force banks out of funding arms, Apartheid, tobacco and others. Coal is now a global issue in the climate change fight. Some of the world's biggest funders are refusing to support banks who do fund coal. 3/13

First, where did Alberta’s Climate Leadership Plan plan come from? (George Soros, perhaps? Foreign-funded radicals?) No. It came from Albertans. A volunteer panel led by @andrew_leach spoke w 1K residents in-person and heard from 25K+ online. 2/24
The panel also engaged with 350+ stakeholders and met w Aboriginal Peoples in three cities, and received hundreds of detailed submissions from NGOs, industry groups and others. 3/24

First re: strategy - don't over promise… that just leads to regret. So this is where the 💯%RE thing is a big mistake, which let's face it is fundamentally about 0% nuclear. And my take is that we need nuclear *with* renewables to make this work ultimately. 2/x @simonahac
There's other stuff: other techs, non-electricity emissions,… But clearly nuclear is the big bogeyman here so I'll focus on that. + the next decade or two will make clear(er) the difference in results b/w those that insist on effectively only relying on renewables vs those… 3/x
…using nuclear+renewables+whatever-else. i.e. California vs New Jersey with New York in the middle somewhere.
This strategy then is a long play. And we must recognise there will be "collateral damage" like X% loss of the Great Barrier Reef, where X>10 4/x
