While the country was distracted by the holidays, @PowerMinNigeria, Sale Mamman, said he'd suspended the MD of #Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Co, #NBET. This is an example of abuse that pervades power in Nigeria. This Minister has no such powers.

#NBET, @nbetnigeria is an #SPV wholly owned by @NigeriaGov and incorporated since 2010. Its shares are subscribed by the Ministry of Finance Inc (MOFI) & by the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE, which is the majority shareholder.

#NBET, @nbetnigeria has a Board of Directors, chaired under its instruments by the @FinMinNigeria. At incorporation in 2010, it was @NOIweala. Currently, it is @ZShamsuna. Before her, it was @HMKemiAdeosun.

In addition to the Minister of Finance, the other members of the Board of @nbetnigeria are @PowerMinNigeria & the CEOs of #BudgetOffice, #AMCON, Debt Management Office, #DMO. It shd be clear from this that @nbetnigeria belongs more within @FinMinNigeria.

When Sale Mamman as @PowerMinNigeria purported to suspend the MD of @nbetnigeria on 24 Dec 2019, he did not consult with the board nor tell @FinMinNigeria as the Chair of the Board. He wasn't executing a decision of the Board. He acted simply because he thought he was powerful.

This is v problematic. If @PowerMinNigeria is allowed to get away with what he claims to have done, @nbetnigeria can't function because any of the other members of Board cn just as easily unilaterally to ransack the management of the company with serious implications for #Nigeria

The Board of @nbetnigeria is well-placed to exercise powers to discipline Management. For that purpose, @ZShamsuna as the current Chair of the Board wields authority on its behalf. @PowerMinNigeria can't be allowed to run amok just because he has tasted power.

It's in the interest of @NigeriaGov to firmly reverse the purported suspension of the MD of @nbetnigeria. It's in every1's interest to ensure proper application of the rules of both corporate governance & human resources management. Sale Mamman as @PowerMinNigeria violated both.

This story at @nbetnigeria isn't just abt #AbuseOfPower. It's also a story of the abuse of masculinity & the role of patriarchy in public office. By coincidence, the Chair of @nbetnigeria board since inception has bn female; the "suspended" MD is female; @PowerMinNigeria is male.

A lot of men in public office in #Nigeria just can't get the idea that they can work under or take directives from women or work alongside women as part of a team. There's absolutely no excuse for what Sale Mamman has done. It's an act of Ministerial vandalism that shd not stand.

It's good to see that @MBuhari has overruled Sale Mamman in @PowerMinNigeria on the issue of suspension of the MD of @nbetnigeria. Not doing so would have destroyed the company. Even more, it wld have made the role of @ZShamsuna as Board Chair untenable.

Now that it's clear that Mr. Sale Mamman acted without authority & in desperate abuse of power as @PowerMinNigeria in the matter of purported suspension of the MD of @nbetnigeria, it seems logical to ask what happens to him. What consequences follow....?

@PowerMinNigeria @nbetnigeria In 1 week, @NigeriaGov has bn put in the insalubrious position of reversing @PowerMinNigeria 2ice: 1st with reference to the sacking of the MD of Rural Electrification Agency in bad faith & now with his vandalism at @nbetnigeria. Why does @EngrSMamman have to remain a Minister?
