Let me just be *that* guy again for a moment. In 1986 we bombed Libya in retaliation for a terrorist act. We literally tried to kill Qaddafi. France wanted no part of it and made us fly around French airspace. That night, we screwed up and hit the French embassy in Libya. /1
Pop quiz, hotshots: Who's responsible for the hitting the French embassy?
1. Qaddafi for being a douchebag
2. The French for making us fly the long way around and tiring out our boys
3. Reagan and the US military for getting a target wrong during a discretionary strike.

I'll add one more example and then go back to work.
In 1983, the United States was keeping Soviet air defenses jumpy as hell by testing their response times to incursions. On purpose. In September 83, a Korean airliner strayed into Soviet airspace. They shot it down.

Then, as now, plenty of people laid the blame on Reagan. If we hadn't been spying on them, if we hadn't escalated Soviet-US tensions, if we hadn't been poking their air defenses, etc.
The USG rejected all of that and Jeane Kirkpatrick tore them a new one at the UN.

The Soviets didn't really care what kind of plane it was. The Koreans had screwed up and flown over their installations in the Far East before. They were tired of it. They were going to teach everyone a lesson.
So who's to blame? Reagan, for "escalating?" Or the Soviets?

Enough already about how Trump caused the Iranians to shoot down an airliner. He didn't. Any of you want to question my anti-Trump cred, you can f*** right off, but it's time to talk like grownups for a moment about military operations. /1
I do not yet know how Iran shot down that plane. Occam's Razor says: Incompetence, failure to spread the word, some dumbass who wasn't trained enough, poor discipline among air defense guys. It wasn't a U.S. hit on an airliner. It was a screwup during operations. /2
"Oh, but Trump made them jumpy." Yes, well, when you've deputized a terrorist scumbag to travel around the region training people in killing civilians and conducting irregular warfare via proxies, you have to think that guy might get killed. The Iranians are not new at this. /3

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."
