Confession. I never brought into story that a financially independent, accomplished, political, bi-racial woman marrying into Royal family was symbol of post racial Britain. Despite this, like many, I’m stunned by further OFF the scale unleashing of racism & misogyny past week.
The reason why the story has resonance with so many poc is because of the doubling down of racism, misogyny, white supremacy and absolute denial of racism and how it manifests in our daily lives, places of work, regardless of how much privilege or agency an individual has.
And another reason this story resonates is because anyone who has been in a relationship or is married to someone who is a different race to them knows how external racism from outside world and from wider family members impacts a relationships dynamics. Racism is about power.
You don’t suddenly become an anti-racist by being with someone outside of your ‘own race’ or
‘faith group.’ Just ask a Black Muslim or an Asian Muslim how they are forced to navigate anti-Blackness in Muslim spaces if they happen to be together or vice versa.
