Sometimes I think this is the biggest hurdle to jump in modern politics; freeing people from the false identification with the wealthy. It is truly important that we share a single economic reality
And it’s wild how embedded this misidentification is in corporate media. Business news is written from the perspective of shareholders and CEOs. Rarely those whose lives are shattered by things cutely named “streamlining” and “synergising” or whatever.
If firings are mentioned it’s to point to them as a *solution* to some problem that exists in only the minds of those who are upset by a 0.5% drop in profit margins or something equally ridiculous.
And one other way I see this is in the way mainstream media talk about jobs. They talk about jobs like they are some kind of sentient object acting on its own will. Eg. “Jobs are moving overseas” Excuse me, jobs don’t pack up their bags and decide to move. Managers take jobs away
It’s important when you read a story, whose interests are steering it.

Because there’s a difference between:
“Hundreds devastated as company closes down local factory”
And
“BigChem CEO shows innovation by moving operations to high-tech site”

Same story, different issues.
I understand, at first glance it may appear these things don’t matter. But if it is important to you to be an informed ‘citizen’ then you’re going to look to news to help make sense of your world. And the media has the power to train you to work against your own interests.
