We were invited to a dinner/game night/celebration of Nunu being cancer free last night and I made haleem in the instapot for it! Haleem is a rich stew w beef, lentils, barley, made usually in winters. I decided to video tape step by step to share. 1/
You'll need 2 lbs of boneless beef, thawed, rinsed, drained. You can use boneless chicken but beef is more authentic. First, brown a couple of sliced onions in generous amounts of vegetable oil. @ChuckWendig this is the best way to do batches of onions. 2/
Remove half the onions and add your meat with some salt, garlic and cumin seeds. Employ a small child to occasionally stir it. 3/
Adde a few cups of water after your meat browned up, close the pot and use the meat setting for an hour. 4/
Take the kids to the park. 5/
Return to a rich broth and tender beef. Remove beef with a slotted spoon. 6/
Add your haleem mix to the broth along w 1/2 the spice packet it comes with and 3 more cups of water 7/
I always add extra daal to the haleem mixes. 8/
Correct your spice instructions. Add your shredded beef back into the pot along with a large cup of plain oats and 2 cups water. Quick cook, rolled, stone cut, it doesn't matter. Forgot to mention in the video. 9/
After slow cooking for 2 hours behold the savory rich goodness and give it a stir. 10/
This recipe makes a lot of haleem. It freezes beautifully too but I divided mine up. Next step is optional but you can temper a tsp of paprika in a few tablespoons of oil or ghee to top the haleem. Heat the paprika gently so it doesn't burn. 11/
First of many toppings. Adds rich color and smoky flavor. 12/
Haul to dinner party. Garnish with reserved fried onions and chopped cilantro. Serve with sliced fresh garlic, lemon wedges. Explain to confused friends wth you're doing. 13/
