AMOTEKUN, HISBAH, GROWING NATIONAL INSECURITY AND THE HYPOCRISY OF THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT

A THREAD by Savn Daniel

Nigeria is a federal republic composed of 36 states and the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT). Although pilloried along religious and ethnic lines.
One of the strongest argument advanced for the creation of the Hisbah was the need to enforce seemingly moral principles, that are in comforting with Islamic precepts. Its creation attracted little noise. One can safely say that Hisbah, going by their operation isba State Police.
When insecurity rose to an unprecedented level, the Borno State govt created CJTF, a nongovernmental SELF-DEFENCE MILITIA that coordinated and at times aligned with the military to prevent attacks against civilian populations by Boko Haram and ISIS-WA.
It is pertinent to state that the creation of hisbah in many states immediately raised fears of religious zealotry, if not intolerance, and the repression of nonconformists, Muslim and non-Muslim, alike.
These fears are reflected in descriptions of the hisbah variously as ‘Islamic police’, ‘morality police’, and even ‘state police’, a reference to the contentious issue of policing powers, currently vested solely in the federal government within Nigerian federalism.
Self defence cannot be denied any one neither does any one require the approval of another to defend himself.

This is why the Yoruba Council of Elders once raised an alarm that Yoruba land, Southwest Nigeria, is under siege of herdsmen: ripplesnigeria.com/insecurity-yor…
The Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, the Alaafin of Oyo, once expressed worry over the activities of marauding herdsmen in the South-West, warning that Yoruba people have what it takes to defend themselves and interests against all enemy attacks:

This uncomplimentary development in the West which saw criminal activities such as banditry, armed robbery and lately, kidnapping and rape of genuinely innocent and law-abiding citizens. It became increasingly worrisome. Hence, there was need to protect the people.
The indices of insecurity grew exponentially to the extent that many Yoruba people living abroad were (and are still) afraid to come home: premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssout….

What do you do in a nation where to defend yourself is deemed illegal?
Nobody has given cogent reason why the Southwest is denied the Right to defend itself, giving the fact that the Nigerian security institution has not lived up to its name, satisfactorily.

Why should a people whose lives and properties are daily attacked denied such right?
If you check the dailies, you would read very shocking events that promoted the creation of Amotekun, which is justified by law.

One begin to wonder how the peace, safety and order of the people of Southwest affects Arewa youths.

It is most disturbing to say the least.
When NORTH was ravaged by BH, Nigerians were more than happy when Civilian JTF was created....

Today, the people of South West are being killed by Bandits, Bokoharam, HERDSMEN and Kidnapers, and a section of the country is saying they shouldn't defend themselves.
