1. Good morning Nigerians. Last lap campaigns towards the Presidential and NASS elections for next Saturday. It is #NextLevelNigeria all the way. Today we examine SECURITY. We give you the past, the present and the future with PMB/PYO on securing Nigeria. This is a thread
2. Where we were:
Security was the biggest challenge for Nigeria before the APC came into office in 2015. The worst form of the insecurity that bedevilled the nation was the insurgency being waged by the Boko Haram terrorist group.
3. BH's reign of terror caused so much fear & carnage in Northern Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory. There were also various militant groups & separatists. The IPOB as you will recall threatened & began a mobilisation towards secession. Niger Delta was not left out
4. Where we are:
PMB/PYO have & are doing the following:
4.1 Increased allocation of funds to Security as well as prudent utilisation of such funds by plugging of all leakages that existed before May 2015.
4.2 More transparent process for procurement of equipments.
4.3 The decimation of BokoHaram by a revitalised Military
4.4 Deployment of Special Forces to join in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast
4.5 The release of the Chibok & Dapchi school girls, as well as over 16,000 persons in Boko Haram captivity.
4.6 Recruitment of more personnel into the Police & Army
4.7 Recovering of the Local governments & Territories previously under Boko Haram control in the North East & rebuilding lives of citizens there
4.8 Return of over 1M displaced persons in the North East to their communities
4.9 The incidence of kidnapping has been curtailed to a large extent culminating in the arrest of kidnap kingpins & dismantling of kidnap cells across the country.
4.10 Major criminal gangs were busted around the country.
4.11 The morale of the Nigerian military has been boosted by the increase in their welfare packages.
4.12 The re-organisation & equipping of the Nigerian Armed Forces with modern hardware.
4.13 Sustained peace in the Niger Delta through consistent funding of the FG amnesty programme for ex-militants and the revitalisation of the Joint Task Force.
4.14 The Herders/Farmers Clashes were curtailed with the arrest of criminals behind the attacks.
4.15 Successful military actions in the country (Operation Lafiya Dole & Operation Last Hold, to defeat Boko Haram in the NE, Operation Whirl Stroke, in Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba & Zamfara to tackle menace of armed herdsmen, cattle rustlers, communal militias, kidnappers & bandits.
5. Where PMB/PYO are Headed:
5.1 Ensure troops continue to have the training, equipment, & support that they need when they are deployed, & the care that they & their families need & deserve when they return home.
5.2 Continuous modernisation of the military & Police while also eliminating outdated programs & unnecessary spending.
5.3 Continuous upgrading of defence capability with the acquisition of high-grade weapons to tackle recurring security issues.
5.4 To develop the Nig Armed Forces to a respected & professional force operating modern defence systems capable of defending the territorial integrity & independence of the country.
5.5 To build a knowledge & technology driven Armed forces with smartest Nigerians to enlisted.
5.6 Continue partnership with foreign partners to train & re-train the Armed Forces & Police to tackle modern day criminality & terrorism.
5.7 Invest heavily to improve intelligence and information sharing amongst the various security agencies.
5.8 Building strategic alliances with countries and face common threats in the West African sub-region and all around the world. Through these alliances, curb the flow of weapons & armed militia from Libya and the Maghreb.
5.9 Decentralisation of the Police for effective policing of States and Communities.
5.10 Deploy adequate resources to mop the illegal arms in circulation in the country and stop the proliferation of arms around the country.
5.11 Build one of the strongest and well-motivated fighting forces in the World.
5.12 Institutionalise a benefit system for families of security force members who lose their lives or sustain injuries in the course of their service
5.13 Rehabilitation of injured security force members
5.14 Total overhaul of the Nigerian Police College focusing on the improvement of the facility, training modules, and faculty.
5.15 Responsive & Modern Security Systems
5.17 Upgrading of weapons and technology used by security forces and agents
5.18 Tightening border security across all points of entry
5.19 Speedy intervention and deployment of security forces in troubled areas and areas where ethnic and tribal strife prevail
6. Conclusion:
PMB/PYO's vision of securing Nigeria is holistic. It considers, policy, action plans & has breadth, addressing human resource capacity development, infrastructure (fighter jets, arms, armada) coalition, collaboration with foreign partners. #NigeriaDecides
