THREAD ON 'RAPE STORM'

Thought I'd hold my peace but I get a sense that silence in the face of reckless, divisive & highly inflammatory posts that put our reputation & values, as a people and country, in disrepute is not an option. #Rwanda #RwOT 1/12
Someone has literally been shaming women who experienced sexual harassment or even rape, or whose loved ones have been victims, or for simply for denouncing rapists. He went as far as questioning the integrity of our justice system suggesting it is easily swayed by tweets! 2/12
Social media is an equaliser. You don’t need to be a lawyer or anybody for that matter to have a say on these streets. It’s an open space with a cocktail of different emotions, opinions & allegations, some fake. And not all must necessarily align with our biases or beliefs. 3/12
‘My learned’ friend’ says twitter is not a court of law but who said it is? Yet he qns a court ruling on a rape case for it casts a shadow over his ‘findings’. Is cohabiting proof that no rape took place? I am no legal expert but sometimes you just let common sense prevail 4/12
You moan at how you’ve bn branded a rape apologist but haven’t you strenuously & arrogantly defended every ‘accused’ (even convicts), scoffed at every claim, and dismissed potential victims as liars? Maybe it’s about time you took a hard look at your dangerous stance? 5/12
I am not saying there are no false claims, neither am I denying that some people have jumped to conclusions too quickly – I sympathise with the victims of concocted accusations and denounce those making them up – but, first things first: sexual violence must be condemned. 6/12
The truth is that, for a rape victim to come out, anywhere, is no enviable task. It’s not anyone’s cup of tea! It takes courage, sometimes sacrifice. It’s cold-hearted & counterproductive to pour scorn on every soul that comes out. These are our sisters, daughters, mothers! 7/12
Rape victims need every support and assurance that society cares about their pain, that justice will be delivered and that rape has no place in #Rwanda. Mocking (potential) victims can only intimidate future victims into silence & undo the gains we’ve made on women's rights 8/12
I notice my friend drew from his experience in amateurish high school debate competitions. Like shaming victims of gender violence is even a matter of public debate! As a human rights lawyer, you should have known better! At the very least keep a respectful silence. Please!! 9/12
I don’t know what to say about the claim that ‘spin dictatresses’ comb the country looking for victims of gender-based violence to prop up. Attacking the wife of the abusive ex-Musanze V/Mayor for tweeting her ordeal & those who introduced her to Twitter was a shocker, bro! 10/12
About pple tagging their President in a bid to get justice or have a problem solved I hope that's joke. Looks like you’ve ascribed to yourself powers to determine who Rwandans tweet, what and when to tweet. Many can't wait to get a #ConnectRwandaChallenge smartphone.11/12
Now, there is probably no chance you’ll change your mind & attempt even some faint atonement for your insensitive and disrespectful posts. That’s your right and its fine. But please don't expect people to swallow your skewed perspective hook, line and sinker! Stay blessed! 12/12
