Wow. Barcelona has declared a climate emergency that gets straight to the point: "The current economic model is based on endless growth, consumption & a permanent race for profit. This economic system threatens the ecological balance of our planet & has multiplied inequalities."
"Certainly, the global ecological crisis and, in particular, the climate crisis, are largely due to the excessive consumption of rich countries and, above all, the most privileged social groups."

Smith wrote this piece on "green growth" yesterday. Here are my thoughts on what's wrong with it, and on how Smith might move forward. The source for my claims is at the end of the thread. bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
1) Smith parades a bunch of graphs showing US GDP rising while use of energy, some metals, and water remain steady. But these graphs don't account for the resource footprints of goods that the US imports from abroad; i.e., extraction and production that has been offshored.
2) When we *do* account for the footprint of imports, we see that the US economy is not dematerializing at all. Blue is US GDP, red is aggregate domestic resource consumption (Smith's approach), and green is total resource footprint, which includes the impact of imported goods.

There is a tacit double standard at play in development economics that feels to me distinctly racist. Why is it that workers in the global North are seen as worthy of the minimum wage ($35/day), while workers in the global South are worthy only of the poverty line ($1.90/day)?
Pundits celebrate when workers in the South go from $1.90 to $2/day, proclaiming an end to poverty and a vindication of globalized capitalism. We would never apply that standard to a worker in the North. We would be horrified, and indignant about their exploitation.
Because for workers in the North we readily apply the standards of morality and justice. But when it comes to workers in the South we apply the standards of mere biological survival.

Neoliberal economists justify the huge inequality in wages between global North and South by saying that the latter have lower productivity.

It's not true. In fact, the reality is exactly the opposite.
Southern workers working in globalized industries have similar productivity levels to their Northern counterparts. After all, in many cases they are working for the very same companies with the same technology (i.e., workers in a GM factory in Mexico, or Nike factory in India).
Indeed, quite often their productivity is higher, as they are subject to much stricter labour regimes, and levels of exploitation that would not be legal in the North.

And yet their wages may be up to thirty times lower.

That is apartheid. It's time for a global minimum wage.

Well, maybe not until next week. Tonight is just a study session on the city's climate strategy and retail health.
Some very interesting notes on this for council. The retail study, in particular, was *packed* with facts. Expect a robust Twitter feed tonight.
We're getting started. The Young Women's Voices for Climate is here, in costume. As what, I can't tell, but I earlier heard them rehearsing a song about the climate crisis set to the tune of "Can you feel the love tonight?" from the Lion King.

Like very many people I'm alarmed at the massive threat #ClimateChange directs at the people of this planet, a threat that is already killing large numbers of the poorest. Unlike #XR I don't think this can be tackled in a single issue apolitical manner - that approach will fail
The 1st reason for failure is obvious, the capitalist economic system goes into crisis when growth falls much below 3% a year. That 3% means production will double every 24 yrs so even renewables replace 40% of fossil fuels CC gas production will rise
The second is that for many people a threat in 2050 is impossibly distant in comparison with paying the rent at the end of this week. We need a movement that addresses immediate in your face problems of low rages, high rents, racism & all oppressions

Leaving @USChamber was a good first step, but until recently, its other trade group @TechNetUpdate didn’t even name climate or clean energy as priorities.

Many other leading companies still support muscle-bound lobbying groups like the @USChamber and @ShopFloorNAM, which are inveterate opponents in Congress of climate action, often contrary to their members’ views.
