I’ve been saying/writing for months: Racism is on the ballot for many black Americans in 2020. And as this poll illuminates, it’s not just about the president; black folks are distrustful of their white neighbors, friends and co-workers this cycle. 
That black people simultaneously feel the stakes are high for them this election *and* that they feel they have to figure out how to survive/succeed in a racist environment regardless is probably one of the bigger takeaways here.
As important as this polling is, journalists cannot stop here. Exploring white voters’ understanding of race in America in this moment — and how those feelings are motivating them politically this cycle — is important and worth early and often exploration by reporters.
This poll also hopefully reframes election reporting around who is experiencing economic anxiety and who is feeling like their country is changing — and how these sentiments will play out at the ballot box.
Lastly, this poll is an opening for a conversation among Americans, particularly those concerned about the deepening divisions in our country but unsure of how to confront them. Talk to people who don’t look like you about the questions raised here.
