Quick note on why I am emphasising the December date so much. It is NOT to counter the story that Brexit will be done by Jan 31st. I do not particularly care about this spin. I DO care about real effects of the implementation of the Withdrawal Agreement (short thread)
1) Citizens relying on EHIC will see their treatment denied in February. The WA transition period means it should be accepted until the end of the year. But the people who accept it are doctors and hospitals. Do they know? Doesn’t Brexit happen Jan 31st?
2) And this is my point: The transition period will only be implemented properly if the people who have to apply it are aware. The correct information needs to get to the people who need to know. And if they’re bombarded with “it’s all done on Jan 31st” - well...

I have seen a lot of similar discussions recently. Let me propose a different answer: none. The ‘importance’ of these countries across the board is unanswerable. Let me give you just two examples 1/3
A) Trade.The US, EU27 and China form the three most powerful entities. The EU has exclusive competences in the area - it is one block. B) military. Here the EU has almost no power, the UK is one of the most important countries - as is also Russia, of far less significance f trade
But even that lacks nuance. Because if you are wondering how to resolve a trade problem in Kazakhstan, you will have to think about Russia, too. The reality is complex.

How significant is Boris Johnson meeting with new European Commission President @vonderleyen this afternoon? It’s significant in that it’s their first face-to-face in their new roles BUT today does not mark start of post #Brexit trade talks. Why? /1
As we know from Brexit Stage One: The Leaving Process, the EU is fond of procedure and regulation.(It’s the formula to keep so many member states more or less together.) EU law dictates that trade talks can’t start till UK legally leaves bloc (end Jan), and then .. /2
EU countries must agree a mandate for EU Commission to negotiate a comprehensive trade agreement on their behalf. Mandate then has to be formally signed off at minister level by reps of all EU countries. All this means EU says trade talks will start beginning March AND .. /3

Yesterday, we heard from the teams that *lost* the cases that are being appealed to the Supreme Court. That's because in appeals, those doing the appeal go first. Pannick spoke for the Miller case, which lost in High Court; Keen argued for Govt which lost Scottish case. /3

I'm currently at this #Brexit conference in Copenhagen, where the British ambassador and several #DExEU officials will be on panels with representatives of Danish trade and security. It'll be very interesting to see what's said, especially in light of May's recent Munich speech.
