In trying to reduce the impact of our diets, we tend massively to over-emphasise #FoodMiles, and under-emphasise the type of food we eat. Even if you shipped bananas 6 times round the planet, their impact would be lower than local beef and lamb. ourworldindata.org/food-choice-vs…
In my experience, many people are extremely reluctant to hear this. We've been so bombarded with the notion that local = good that we miss the bigger picture, and end up with a highly simplified, misleading worldview. I hope this new dataset helps to correct that.
I've come to the conclusion that the biggest obstacle to developing a sustainable diet is bucolic romanticism. It starts at the very dawning of consciousness, as infants are exposed to thousands of books like this:
These books give us a remarkably consistent, but entirely misleading, view of what farming is like. Like all books for very young children, they create a sense of warmth and safety. As adults, we subconsciously seek that place, and associate it it with what is good and right.
It's why debates about these issues so quickly turn toxic: we have a subconscious emotional investment in a particular, mythic model of farming, and get really upset when someone challenges it.
The reactive denial (and personal abuse) arising from this thread attests to the points it makes.
