"Trump must prove he had absolutely pure motives for investigating Biden corruption in Ukraine!" scream the people who have no problem with the FBI and FISA courts corruptly targeting the Trump campaign in 2016.
It's probably not a total coincidence those two stories are unfolding in parallel - anxiety about the FBI scandal helped Dems decide to pull the trigger on impeachment - but they make a lovely ironic contrast. It all depends who the target is, and which Party card they carry.
All the more ironic as the FBI scandal gets bigger and bigger, with solid documentation behind each revelation, but inside the Beltway those bombshell detonations are muffled by the loud circus organ music piping from the Democrats' ridiculous impeachment show.
Outside the Beltway, beyond the circle of partisan hacks and political operatives, many people who are gung-ho for impeachment would be sincerely confused if the FBI scandal (which they've been told very little about) was explained and presented to them as a contrast.
"Of course Trump had to be investigated by any means necessary! Who cares if a few corners were cut and rules were broken? He was probably a Russian asset!" they would blubber.
Biden, in contrast, is seen as a member of the ruling elite with good Party credentials who must be investigated with the utmost delicacy. Even if no violation of the written rules can be demonstrated, Trump must burn for violating unwritten rules that protect the elite.
And the slightest hint of political self-interest is used to angrily condemn Trump for investigating Biden in Ukraine by people who cannot conceive of the slightest political taint to what the Clinton campaign and Obama Justice Department did to Trump in 2016.
And so we arrive at the Alice in Wonderland absurdity of people who said there was no significance whatsoever to Obama DOJ people talking about "insurance policies" against a Trump win, shrieking that Trump must prove his innocence of political motivations re: Biden. /end
