You know what? I think it's time for another thread of awesome indie roleplaying games that new designers ought to pick up. RT and add your own suggestions!
Dread, by @Epidiah is the foremost example of a game that uses the interface to convey theme & tone. You use a Jenga tower to convey horror movie tension. It's glorious and can be grabbed over at indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Dread.ht…
If you want to see how a brilliant designer can adapt mechanics to suit different themes? Star Crossed by @muscularpikachu and @bullypulpit_hq transforms horror sensibilities into stories of forbidden romance. bullypulpitgames.com/games/star-cro…
Re. awesome games by @muscularpikachu , I would be remiss if I failed to mention the brilliance of "For the Queen", published by @EvilHatOfficial. The cutting edge of card-based roleplaying games IMO. evilhat.com/home/for-the-q…
I know that For the Queen was inspired by another, less known card-based RPG of relationships. 183 Days is a two-player story game about two psychics who can see the future and foretell their relationship will only last 183 days. drivethrucards.com/product/144510…+
While we are on the topic of romance games, all the credit for this genre goes to the brilliant @emilycare and her trilogy of games found within "The Romance Trilogy". Breaking the Ice, Shooting the Stars, and Under my Skin are essential reading. blackgreengames.com/shop/romancetr…
Polaris by @P_H_Lee is one of the first GM-less games in the hobby. Ice elves at the end of the world, as the sun is rising. It's brilliant and worth your attention. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Polaris.…
Another ground-breaking RPG with distributed authority is Archipelago, which tells games similar to Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle. All proceeds go to charity! drivethrurpg.com/product/147623…
Now, if you want to round out your collection of classical story-games for your hacking purposes, I cannot recommend Primetime Adventures by @DogEaredDesigns enough. Create a TV show as a group with collaborative mechanics! indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Primetim…
Let's get a bit more serious with this next one. Dog Eat Dog, by @liamlburke is a breathtaking game about colonialism and assimilation. It's a game that explores a difficult topic and uses the game mechanics to explore society critically. drivethrurpg.com/product/198050…
Along those lines is the revealing and under-appreciated game Steal Away Jordan by @QueenOvPirates in which you portray the stories of people who have been enslaved in the antebellum south. Learn how to explore challenging subject matter. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Steal-Aw…
There are more thoughtful games from the archives. Mars Colony and Mars Colony: 39 Dark are two-player games or rulership and revolution by @tckoppang drivethrurpg.com/product/180359…
Kingdom, by @lamemage is another brilliant game that explores issues of ruleship and presents novel mechanics. Along with Microscope, they offer some robust tools for new designers. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Kingdom-…
I have to give a special shout-out to another game by @lamemage; Follow is one of the most beginner-friendly roleplaying games I have seen to date and should be in everyone's arsenal. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Follow-P…
Do you want to discover the variety of roleplaying game mechanics and ideas? You would be well served by the seven brilliant games in @PelgranePress 's games anthology "Seven Wonders" indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Seven-Wo…
Also supported by Pelgrane and designed by dozens of creators is the award-winning game #Feminism, edited by @BGGameWorks Anna Westerling, and Lizzie Stark. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Feminism…
You really ought to check out Companion's Tale by @labmouse which explores the stories of the many people surrounding the hero of legend. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Companio…
You may be curious to check out Prism by @widdledragon while you are at it, for stories of aquatic mer-folk and intimacy. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Prism-Pr…
Selfishly, in the middle of the thread so I don't take up too much space, I am proud of After the War, which I designed with @AlasdairStuart to tell stories of community building and healing after trauma. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/After-th…
Dialect, by @HSeya and @chicalashaw
is one of the most moving games of recent memory, It's a game about building a language and a story at the same time, and watching it fade. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Dialect-…
Now let's get to some of the foundational games that any game designer should have in their collection. Apocalypse World 2nd Edition by @NightSkyGames and @lumpleygames led an entire design movement. Get a copy and learn from it if you have a chance. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Apocalyp…
Blades in the Dark, by @john_harper and @EvilHatOfficial was inspired by Apocalypse World and used that foundation to tell stories of scoundrels in a city of ghosts. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Blades-i…
Similarly, @lackingceremony worked with @ben_rosenbaum to design Dream Apart / Dream Askew which presented the Belonging Outside Belonging framework for interpersonal drama. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Dream-As…
If you want to see the continued evolution of those ideas, Flotsam by @BlackArmada1 uses those frameworks to tell stories of the underclass in a space station. Lovely game. indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Flotsam-…
Spire, by @RowanRookDecard also provides a brilliant framework for design with their Resistance Engine. Gearheads ought to check it out! indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Spire.ht…
Last, but not least from my tweetstorm, is Sigmata by @Papa_Shell whose game about strategically resisting fascism also has some elegant mechanics worth your attention. drivethrurpg.com/product/247973…
We are drowning in brilliant games. Add your own recommendations and links to the list for others to find. Let's give new designers the tools they need to thrive and share our love for games. /fin
