These measures are a live policy experiment on a scale (never seen before?) on the impact isolating a country with an outbreak can have.
As for today's unfortunate outbreak numbers:

- 6,057 cases (up from 4,474)
- most (5,970) in mainland China
- 132 deaths (up from 107)
- additional cases in Germany and Canada

There's a broad range of R0 estimates — from 1.4 to 5.47 — being put forward. (R0 is how many other people one sick person is likely to infect on average in a group that’s susceptible to the disease.)

That's normal; it's early in outbreak & in best case, R0s not stable.👇2/8
But some of the leading epi modeling labs — @C_Althaus @maiamajumder @JonRead15 — are coming out with estimates that suggest a much narrower range:

& the first case just popped up in the US.

The 30-something Washington state resident fell sick with pneumonia after returning to Seattle from Wuhan, China— the outbreak epicenter — Jan. 15. 1/

By January 19, the man reached out to health care providers to report his symptoms and travel history. They suspected 2019-nCoV and confirmed it within 2 days.

The man is in good condition, in isolation at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington.
