Someone very senior in the advertising & tech world told me the other day essentially: pick your candidate then go lower, more aggressive and dirtier with adtech & data targeting than 2016 if you want to win. I don’t believe this should be a winning strategy regardless of party.
The final challenge here is any push for changes whether from regulators or major participants will be seen as political. No different than changes to Trending in 2016. Facebook leadership and Thiel pushed past concerns from everyone else to keep status quo to protect their $$$.

diving in on Facebook reports while listening to earnings. It looks like advertising crept up to 98.4% of Q4 revenue making no mistake their entire business model continues to be tied to massive, ubiquitous and unbridled data collection in order to microtarget advertising.
Sheryl Sandberg talking up small biz benefits of targeted ads..also importance of privacy to the company. Wait until CFO section, listen closely for risk from privacy laws and Apple, Microsoft, etc rolling out tracking prevention which is clearly articulated in FB's 10k reports.
There it is. Except deceleration of revenue due to global privacy laws. "The majority of impact is ahead of us" says Facebook's CFO. This matches FB's earnings risks and flies in face with messaging FB pays lobbyists and feeds to press that privacy law will only make FB stronger

Put simply: Facebook is facilitating the discrediting of news media. The largest political ad campaign on Facebook is microtargeting vulnerable audiences with attacks at press and Facebook is making $ from it, hurting @ewarren’s chances and keeping board member Peter Thiel happy.
Warren is relevant to this point because if she wins or is even the D candidate then Facebook becomes an even larger public discussion than it already is - imagine - and that includes breakup talk.

And Peter Thiel matters because he’s on Facebook’s board, he was reported to have met with Zuckerberg and Trump last DC trip and pressed Facebook not to change its ad policy. Among many other things. foxbusiness.com/technology/pet…

👋🏽there. I would make my same point for every one of @DCNorg's premium publisher members. Buying brand advertising on any premium publisher is worth more than simply targeting eyeballs (or devices/cookies) for clicks. The context of news & entertainment has value to advertisers.
Simply highlighting the Super Bowl which still has one of the strongest economic signals of worth to audiences. Ands this in sports category which remains the most significant sponsorship and brand pipeline (for digital, too). I have some experience in it - 100% digital. Cheers.
Here is some research on value of environment. No doubt, many advertisers will still buy microtargeting of eyeballs even through a middlemen who at times bundle in low-quality inventory. It's their right but there is a difference, yes? adweek.com/digital/ads-pr…

I understand you are planning to vote for @BernieSanders.

This is a free country, and you have the right to #vote for him. I am grateful to live in a country where we actually have a choice when we go to the #ballotbox. There are many countries where that option doesn't exist.
That there are countries were the head of government places his/her name on the ballot, no competition, and still conducts an election. Of course, in such countries, voting is actually often MANDATORY.
Did you realize that?

The result? The head of government receives overwhelming ballot box support. 80% 90% support!

This isn't trivial. Super PACs play a huge role in politics and are going to be spending big bucks on Facebook

So how are these ads fact-checked?
3. First, Facebook takes the money.

Then Facebook starts running the ad on the platform.

THERE IS ZERO EFFORT TO FACT CHECK ANY POLITICAL AD BEFORE ITS PUBLISHED

Facebook will show any political ad to as many people as you can afford with no fact-checking
