Alexander was not just morally and legally wrong in accepting that what Trump did did not rise to the level of impeachable offense. He was wrong in not thinking the matter serious enough to warrant a real trial with witnesses, to think he knew everything he needed to know.
There are many predictable outcomes from this rigged GOP farce, most of them profoundly, perhaps irreparably damaging to our democracy. But one that is absolutely certain is that there will be further revelations about Trump crimes and abuse in Ukraine and elsewhere.
Not only will this reveal the procedural failings of this trial, but it will be evidence of the complicity of these Republicans in the crimes of cover-up and obstruction. Had they merely done their duties, they could have known more. But you see, they were aware of that.
The GOP chose not to know more not because, as Alexander and others suggested, they didn't need to know more. Rather, they chose not to know more because they knew that the more they knew, the more clear the president's crimes and their complicity would become.
