Quite a story this - relies on Nissan’s share of UK market going from 1 in 25 cars to 1 in 5 as WTO tariffs of 10% applied to VWs, Fords.
Presumably Japan trade deal helps with parts too...
... It’s denied that this is an actual contingency plan though in the official Nissan quote, which has the rather alarming quote that WTO tariffs would make Nissan’s “entire business” both in UK and Europe “not sustainable”...
Eg the idea seems to predate these reports on plans for a major post Ghosn restructure... including suggestion two plants would be shut:
Still, we know that Japan is considering asking for an immediate end to UK auto import tariffs under a UK trade deal, unlike the 8 year phased reduction under the existing EU-Japan deal - lots of moving parts here..
Interesting thought experiment to think how to aggressively pursue import substitution such as this:
Govt would have to stick to WTO rules but could work outside EU state aid. Could alter regulations to help eg specific types of electric plug in network.
