rather interesting:

Govt says in statement it “worked hard” to get Tesla Gigafactory for UK last year, in statement re Manchester site.

When Elon Musk chose Berlin in November, he said Brexit made it “too risky”:

At the time, many played down idea UK under active consideration vs Berlin, but sources in the NW now saying the Manchester site, in Heywood, got down to last two...

Local council leaders not happy with central Government... but Musk is an investor Govt would dearly love...
All of this is consistent with the idea that Berlin was still the main option, maybe UK used to stress test the plan, but no one acknowledged that the Government was actively facilitating Tesla searching for a factory option in UK...
So rather reasonable question as government preps its EU trade plans for Thursday - if conventional car industry has to face ‘one-off costs’ & ‘trade offs’, isnt that precisely in order to diverge regs to attract companies like Tesla/ investors such as Musk?

Governor Carney mentions “special liquidity facilities” in describing “policy arsenal” to deal with coronavirus economic impact - strongly hinting at some of the special arrangements for banking system that supported economy post 2008 crisis, now returning....

Two teams compared things on basis of two mandate documents - 11 areas opened, except UK indicated did not want to negotiate on foreign/security. We remain open: Barnier.

economics of this are that there isn’t a supply issue (as was assumption eg for No Deal contingencies) but a structural increase in demand, possibly focussed on what people are seeing on viral social media clips for other countries ... eg Australia (toilet roll) & Italy (pasta)..
With just in time supply chains, even a slight increase in demand can quickly create images of self fulfilling prophecies, as we’ve seen in papers, but as long as supply chains functioning, which they are (eg no Dover-Calais hold ups) shelves replenished in morning as above

Last night @jeremycorbyn laid down his concrete proposals for Labour to vote with May on the #Brexit Withdrawal Agreement in the Commons.

Let us look at them from an EU27 perspective and what they mean for the negotiations:

@jeremycorbyn On the positive side, Corbyn accepts that the WA will not be reopened - including the backstop - and focuses on the Political declaration to assure the Backstop will not be needed.

As @AndrewDuffEU argued, this is a much more viable path for agreement with the EU27.
@jeremycorbyn @AndrewDuffEU His proposals are, however, little less than a Labour form of cherry picking:

On Customs Union, he wants a seat with full say at the table for the UK. A form of consultations, possibly, but certainly no vote for a third country.

Interesting proposal by a group of German economics to overcome the #Brexit deadlock over the backstop by creating a "European Customs Association" between EU and UK:

A constructive approach, but I am sceptical
First, by essentially taking the customs union out of the EU and creating an EU/UK structure above it, politically it strongly blurs the line between EU and non EU country, opening the way to further disintegration.
Second, it does not solve the sovereignty issues for Brexiteers. The UK could not strike its own trade deals, and - even with a vote, which is politically also difficult for the EU to accept - could always be outvoted by the EU as a block.

Here are some of the key findings from the report in slide form.
First an overview of the study itself:
Rich qualitative data (online survey & focus groups) gathered across the Central Border Region. Detailed examples & viewpoints heard from people on both sides of #border.

Respondents to the survey came from across the 8 local authority areas of the Central Border Region, moreorless equally from both sides of the border. 50/50 male/female. 80% 31-65 yrs.
There were far fewer Leave-voting respondents so they got extra attention in our analysis.
