It’s bad enough when Trump & Pompeo attack journalists. But when your own editors are sexist & racist, who has the back of journalists? Last week Washington Post suspended a journalist over tweets & now we hear they threatened to fire another over tweets thedailybeast.com/washington-pos…
I am from #Egypt, the country that is the 3rd highest jailer of journalists in the world. I was a reporter there & in the Middle East for 10 years before I moved to the US in 2000. Hearing about self-censorship motivated by sexism and racism in the US disgusts and enrages me.
When editors suspend or threaten to fire threaten journalists because those journalists point out sexism and racism, those editors are effectively doing the bidding of Trump and Pompeo. Those editors are encouraging self-censorship for the benefit of white wealthy patriarchy.
Jeff Bezos - the wealthiest man in ghe history of humanity and owner of the Washington Post - is also the white wealthy patriarchy. When the wealthy patriarchy of Saudi Arabia in the form of Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman tried to blackmail him,Bezos could afford to shrug it off
Journalists cannot so easily shrug it off. It is instructive that in the course of just one week, we learn that it is a female reporter and a Black male reporter who have been punished or threatened with punishment for their tweets. Sexism & racism in service of white patriarchy
Staffers Say Sexism Runs Deep At The Washington Post

The USA is a racist and sexist country. I’ve lived here for 20 years and I know. What is instructive about the above articles is that editors are imposing and encouraging self-censorship among journalists. That’s what editors who work in dictatorships do. This is the USA in 2020.
US newspapers insist on a separation between reporting and opinion. What’s especially troubling about the case of Felicia Sonmez and Wesley Lowery is that neither were expressing opinions in the tweets that had editors angry. They were expressing fact.
