Photographer @WilsonWebb captured the cast of #LittleWomenMovie in a popular photographic style of the mid 1800’s known as the collodion process.

Follow this thread for more photos and details on the process! Then, see behind-the-scenes on our Instagram Stories!
@wilsonwebb “The actors were very accommodating and enjoyed seeing the process of making each image. I explained what I was doing and they could see the image fade up from black as it developed. Emma was especially intrigued and said she wanted a wet-plate studio in her house.” - @WilsonWebb
@wilsonwebb @EmmaWatson Invented around 1851, the collodion process is also known as tin type or wet plate photography. The photo has to be taken while the tin or plate is wet with light sensitive chemicals and exposed before the plate dries or else the process will not work.

@wilsonwebb @EmmaWatson Around 25,000 Watt-seconds of flash was used for each photo. It was so bright that you could feel and smell the heat of the light, similar to a thunderstorm.

@wilsonwebb @EmmaWatson @Florence_Pugh Warm colors appear dark, cool colors light, so much care has to be taken about what colors are in clothing and in backdrops.

@wilsonwebb @EmmaWatson @Florence_Pugh @LauraDern Each plate (or photo) was 8x10” and required about 10 mins to prep, expose, and develop plus another 30 mins to clean, dry, and then seal with varnish and an open flame. Each plate is an ordinal, a one of a kind. This process did not allow for copies to be made.

@wilsonwebb @EmmaWatson @Florence_Pugh @LauraDern @mrbobodenkirk “The actors had to sit very still, not because the exposure was long but because the amount of image in focus is less than 1 inch deep. It takes 10-20 seconds to set up the plate to be exposed so if someone moved slightly the photo would be out of focus.” - @WilsonWebb
@wilsonwebb @EmmaWatson @Florence_Pugh @LauraDern @mrbobodenkirk @RealChalamet The lights and backdrops were set up on the sound stage with the March home interior set. When the cast had a few extra minutes, they would come and sit for the photo.
