Just need a moment to say: I'm 100% done with academic conference registration fees. This system is broken.
I could present work at 2 conferences this spring. Both are over $500 for non-members. They obviously want me to renew my membership. For what benefits?
That would be the entirety of my usual travel allocation in a year, and I'm privileged to have that. These are for education-related conferences.

You know, the ones that have themes about access and the public good.
I've got one essential conference I won't miss because it's nourishing and helps me grow.

Beyond that I can't justify anymore. Long flights, time away from family, expensive snooty hotels, $500 registration fees? Nope. It ends this year. #tenure✌️

As someone who has attended, researched, and worked at Maryland, I keep wondering: how did we get here? I think it starts before Loh, when the university drastically elevated its aspirations. A brief timeline.
For me, the Maryland of today really started to take shape in 1998 when Dan Mote became president. At that time, Maryland was much more accessible, engaged in less research, and often didn't compare itself to major flagship universities. Mote changed all of that.
Using "excellence" as his guiding principle, Mote immediately set out the raise the bar Maryland used to judge itself. He wanted the university to see itself differently, as major research university. And he thought it was a problem that Maryland wasn't particularly selective.

Discussions about our individual and aggregate contributions to the climate emergency has changed *fast* in just the past several months. There's no reason to think the pace of change, awareness-raising, or pure panic is going to slow down between now and 2022.
It's conceivable that by 2022 that the idea of hundreds of researchers flying to Japan on carbon-spewing jets in order to share scientific research could be considered morally abhorrent.

So, at the upcoming #TISLR13 in Hamburg, let's get ahead of the conversation. 🙋‍♂️

One of my many pet-peeves at conferences... The ID Badge!

Nearly 50 per cent of the Badges are flipped - as a result you end up seeing a blank card. Why don't they print names on both sides? :)

Also, the font size...so small, it is often impossible to read.
One more (I think I should create a thread/blog-post on this :))

Organizers (hotels) in India need to provide plenty of strong (black) coffee! The heavy conference food and boring talks/panels are recipes for sleep.

Good caffeine is available in plenty in U.S. conferences😉
A note for 'Panel Moderators' - Please just 'moderate'! And speak in moderation :) ... Ideally, as little as possible.

Your job is to ask good questions and get the panelists to speak. Not 'grandstand'. Interrupt, only if the panelist is going on for too long, or off-topic.

That's lovely, but it comes from different buckets. The diversity bucket is different from the career dev bucket.

Most engineers at Google only get 1 conference a year. It doesn't matter if it's diversity or career dev focused. Someone who picks diversity loses on career dev.
Until I became a CRE+developer advocate, I was literally doing 4 different jobs and burning out (and doing a shitty job at each): management, tech leadership, dev advocacy, and inclusion.

The time doesn't materialize from nowhere.
And it's hard to argue to an individual engineering manager why they should not only part with a person for a day but also pay conference registration fees from their eng cost center for a reputational benefit to the company they won't see directly.

#1: In March of 2016, Papadopoulos reveals to Trump—face-to-face—he's a Kremlin intermediary sent to establish a Trump-Putin backchannel (he says Putin is favorably disposed to Trump's candidacy). Trump then and there orders Gordon to coordinate a pro-Kremlin GOP platform change.
#2: In June 2016, Don Jr. knowingly attends a meeting with—and set up by—Kremlin agents. He asks the Kremlin for what he has reason to believe is illegally acquired Clinton material. Afterwards, he (allegedly) tells no one. When caught, he lies about every aspect of the meeting.

1. "#Happiness" can scare #anxiety patients. In our heads, things are always going wrong. Fear of a "happy" moment undone is doubly painful.
Sorry, this won't be a daily affair as I had earlier imagined. But here's insight #2 based on my brush with #depression/#anxiety.
