How do feel about the very real risk of catastrophic simultaneous global crop failures becoming exceedingly high by 2029 due to global warming of 1.7°C from increasing emissions and terrifyingly powerful Arctic albedo & permafrost feedbacks? I feel very very vote Bernie Sanders.
Risks of simultaneous crop failure 'increase disproportionately between 1.5 and 2°C, so surpassing the 1.5°C threshold will represent a threat to global food security.'

We're at 1.3/1.4°C.

Warming is ~0.25°C per decade, but feedbacks may well boost this.sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Jet stream disruption, droughts, extreme heat waves and flooding are all set to cause food production havoc this decade.

And if not by 2029, then soon afterwards...

Remember:

1. Global crop failures hit at 1.5- 2C.
2. Major ecosystems will die by 3C.
3. Humans barely survive at 4C.
4. Earth uninhabitable after 5C.
5. We're set for 1.5C by 2025.
6. Then 2C around 2035.
7. And 3C by 2065.
8. 4- 5C by 2085.

We've already pumped enough CO2 into the atmosphere to hit 3.2C, at which point ecosystems, most species & organised human society all crash.

If CO2 is emitted close to today's rate for another 66 months, we'll hit 2C rapidly (2030s), making 3.2C by 2060-90 disturbingly likely.
Vast areas of the planet will become desert at 3.2C with major forests (like the world's rainforests), corals, mangroves, etc collapsing and dying. Hard to imagine human society remaining unscathed. Most species struggle to adapt/move for survival.

So many targets for staying below 2C have been missed.

And what about a plan for ending the destruction of habitats (deforestation, trawling, mining etc)?

Keeping below 2.5C will be no good if ecosystems/species are being wrecked by overconsumption etc.

Today I tweeted that global average temperatures will stop rising when global CO₂ emissions reach zero.

I have tweeted this before & it is a well-known result, but this time I got a lot of people saying it was not correct!

The relationship between global warming cumulative & cumulative CO₂ emissions came to prominence after three papers in 2009:

It is not necessarily 100% correct to say temperatures will stop rising when net CO₂ emissions reach zero, there may be some 0.x°C change from the time emissions reach zero, & non-CO₂ also effects temperature.

But, warming from time of zero & non-CO₂ are second order.

1. @ExtinctionR Having looked at some of your policies & grievances my advice to you as a scientist is to do your own research before you jump to conclusions; resist the temptation to go down a EnergyDeadEnd path before really appreciating after years of research life's realities
2. @ExtinctionR scenario has come about through a few scientists exaggerating #ClimateChange which is a natural phenomena that has occurred since Earth had an atmosphere; one of the variables keeping us warm is yes photosynthesising #TraceGas #CO2 as well as water vapour (clouds)
3. @ExtinctionR Earth's CO2 levels vary over time & currently only 0.041% or to make it sound larger 410ppm on average; at levels below 200ppm to 150ppm #photosynthesis ceases & all life relying on plants will die off.
Many other variables are involved with #ClimateChange e.g.Sun

Let's do a little reality break about 3D printed guns.
Somebody tweeted me this morning that a 3D printer could "Make a gun while you're sleeping."
See all those parts?
The 3D printer has the potential to make two of them.
You are looking at parts made with machine tools. If many of those parts are two to five THOUSANDTHS of an inch off designed size the gun won't work.
There is no 3D printable equivalent to a steel spring.
