About to see #BirdsOfPrey. Very excite.
LORI PETTY MOTHER OF GOD, Margot Robbie is perfect and this is the most perfect action movie I have seen in... maybe ever. Also hilarious and sexy.
I want to inject this movie directly into my veins in a way I haven't since the time I rented Tank Girl on VHS and watched it over and over again all weekend.
Couple of non-spoilery observations:

1. They managed to give Helena a personality that comes across despite being the character with the least time for development. And it says something about the "child of vengeance" vigilante motif that I'll get into after it's been out more.
2. I completely agree with @GailSimone about how they captured an iconic version of Dinah's heart, and with the allusions to her mother, this is believable as a Black Canary at the start of her career.
@GailSimone Also, it's a very openly queer movie with no queer romance, but also no romance, period. At least three women confirmed on-screen as queer, and Dinah (who is bisexual according to *some* writers at least?) certainly vibes with other women.
@GailSimone All this, and roller derby.

And this movie has such a satisfying physicality to it. The way Harley gathers herself before her signature acrobatic flips. The way things (and people) bounce and rebound. The world and everything in it have weight and heft that's often missing.
@GailSimone It's way more of a Harley Quinn movie than a Birds of Prey movie. It's more of a backdoor pilot for a Birds of Prey movie/series that I really, really hope happens. The opening weekend was apparently not great but with good word of mouth...?
@GailSimone Also, the little details in the movie are great. You want to talk about dramatic irony? If you see it, take a good look at Harley's neck hardware after she gets rid of her J-for-Joker necklace.
@GailSimone And the soundtrack! The soundtrack and the way it was integrated with the fight choreography. Cathy Yan is amazing.

I'm happy that Todd Phillips was able to lose to Taika Waititi, obviously, but I find the idea that Joker was an "adapted screenplay" dubious. Adapted from what? Seems like an original story about an existing character. Is a sequel by that logic an adaptation?
...and this is apparently the correct answer. Weird. That's a much looser definition of "adaptation" than I would have guessed, though I suppose it makes sense. Different creative constraints than a non-sequel.

I question the label "adapted" but I suppose the alternative is to call it "best unoriginal screenplay" and who would want to win that?

If I ever teach a seminar on how to recognize satire, jokes, and fakes, this would be a slide.

What's the biggest tell here?
Right. And after pointing out it doesn't fulfill the assignment at all, correcting multiple mistakes and commenting on each line several times, the teacher awards them with a D.

All in the same day it was turned in.

I would say the grade, the level of detail, and the quick turnaround all serve as substantial tells. None of them are actually impossible, but altogether they add up to "for humorous effect".

For my money, the grade's the biggest. It's effectively the punchline of the piece.

Ah, Crossroads Mall... I bought my first rainbow wig in a year-round costume shop that opened up in one of the many empty storefronts near the anchor store.
That costume shop is gone but they had a pretty sweet set-up, insofar as they could rent the storefront nearest the anchor for their store and then rent the next one over for storage of their high-quality rental costumes for school plays and parties and whatnot.
And then for the little foot traffic that would walk between Barnes and Noble and Target (both still open, as of the last time I was in The Big O), they had displays in several other empty storefronts.

Adonis was the son of princess Myrrha and King Cinyras (more on them later). A mortal beloved by both Persephone and Aphrodite, he became the center of a nasty love triangle. Zeus intervened, saying that he should spend 4 months of the year with Persephone, 4 months of the year
with Aphrodite, and could do anything he wanted during the remaining 4 months of the year. Adonis chose to stay the last 4 months with Aphrodite (no doubt to the chagrin of Persephone. Having said that, Hades, Persephone’s husband, would have approved).

Dumuzi was the Sumerian god of Shepherds, the underworld and vegetation (though as we are about to see, he wasn’t really much of a god…). He was married (some sources say just a lover) of the goddess Inanna. He is identified with the Babylonian god Tammuz, whose tales share many
a similarity with that of Dumuzi. (though there are interesting differences). He was classed as one of the so-called “dying and Rising” gods of antiquity, though the “Dying and Rising” category has fallen out of academic favor.

Any object will do. You can surrender to a tree, you can surrender to a river, you can surrender to anything, your wife, your husband, your guru.
Even through stones, people have attained because it is not a question at all to what you #surrender.

You surrender, and that brings the whole thing, that opens the door. Surrendering, the effort to surrender brings an opening to you.
If you are open to stone, you become open to the whole existence, because it is only a question of opening. How can you be open to a stone, and not open to a tree?
