Here's another way to explain why D's would be wise to put @staceyabrams Abrams into that VP slot. Here is the vote for Dem Senate candidates in 2018, by region for white voters. You'll note, 75% of white voters DID NOT vote for a D Senate candidate in the Midwest or South. 
In the Midwest, there were no Dem senate candidates of color. In the South, there were 2 states that field black gubernatorial candidates (a historic 1st for both) but not for senate and it was only 2 state & this is how the division of the white vote in the South the past decade
so has looked between the parties, as white voters began to exhibit @AshleyJardina's white identity politics. I.O.W: Abrams & Gillum didn't cause it. The point is, even with candidates like @clairecmc & Donnelly- Ds got hammered by white voters in the Midwest, and they will again
in 2020 unless they turnout out more younger & college educated whites than they did in 2016. They need to focus on juicing turnout up of non-white voters.
