Today, on Valentine’s Day, I’d like to talk about a different love, the love of grandparents as today my grandmother is being buried in Normandie. She didn’t want a fuss , so I’m not going, but I’d like to share a little of her, she was one of the most wonderful people I’ve known
She would have been 95 this year and until a few months ago lived independently, still growing most of her own vegetables, cooking for herself and looking after her beautiful garden.

She was the most loving, kind and happy woman and made you feel important and loved.
Despite the pain from arthritis she hand knitted the most wonderful baby cardigans for each of her great grand children.

She gave birth to five children of her own but sadly 2 died in infancy.
Her village was occupied by Nazis in the war, she recalls them having to eat bread made with flour containing mouse droppings as that was all they were given. But also defiant stories of doubling the price of crockery in the shop she worked in when a German captain came to buy!
She & my grandfather were a great love story. Sadly he developed MS and for years she cared for him single handedly, carrying & dragging him over her shoulders to the bathroom, spoon feeding him. She insisted he sat at the top of the table and never ever loved him any less.
She kept a beautiful garden, front for flowers, back for the neatest vegetable garden you’ve ever seen, she was virtually self sufficient.

She made the best soup in the world (the only soup my kids like!)

And quite simply I love her and always will.

Goodbye Odette xx
