People are finally starting to realize that building more (market-rate) housing pushes rents DOWN in the surrounding neighborhood.
It's just simply amazing how painful and difficult it is for folks in the media to accept that this is how housing works. It's like getting fast food executives to admit that minimum wage doesn't kill jobs.
So many people have bought into this story of "luxury" housing --> gentrification --> rising rents, despite all the evidence, that it has burned its way into the brains of almost every commentator. Replacing that story with the truth is like doing amateur dental surgery.
