That’s one of the great hidden truths of American history. Our founding was predicated on protecting wealthy white men’s control over the political and economic future. That purpose has resulted in centuries worth of discrimination and abuse.
You look over the course of our history and any movement to make our economy fairer has led to militaristic violence and oppression. In Tulsa it was mass killing. In the labor movements it was private killers. In the 50’s widespread political and social discrimination.
What we’re seeing now is another fascistic movement with fragile white patriarchal power feeling threatened. Like all fascism through history, they’re casting aside the rule of law and democratic principles because they don’t serve them anymore. It’s always the pattern.
This crisis we’re in makes sense when you view our history as it is, but our denial of what America has been and how it has functioned keeps us from believing our own senses and reacting accordingly. This train was always coming. We have to open our eyes.
