The Soviet Union was a complicated place that America's Cold War culture turned into a monstrous monolith. A person in the 80s who talked about the country with nuance was not necessarily an apologist for totalitarianism.
Just as someone who said positive things about the US in the 1980s was not necessarily an apologist for McCarthyism or American foreign policy in Latin America.
Also, I just remembered that Gorbachev, the person who was the leader of the Soviet Union when Bernie visited there, spoke at my college graduation in 1990. We all applauded him. So does that mean the people who invited him and who applauded him are totalitarian monsters?
I remember in the 80s thinking that the US didn't have everything figured out perfectly, and in fact might be pretty messed up. You know where I got that nutty idea from? Bruce Springsteen, Woody Guthrie, and Bob Dylan.
