@eNCA I've just seen a clip wherein Thabo Mbeki indeed confirmed that de Klerk said he was not aware that apartheid was declared a crime against humanity by the UN. If he personally didn't know, surely, surely researchrs at his foundation should have
easily provided him with the relevant UN document. Should we really accept de Klerk ignorance as a bonafide statement? I don't. At his level he should have known because the UN resolution is part of the total global frontline position against apartheid.
It was part of the pressure that led him and his party to see the fact that apartheid state could not survive and that a democratic dispensation was inevitable. The unavoidable conclusion is that de Klerk was motivated by malicious intentions when he made
that defiant statement. He is actually declaring that the democratic transition was unnecessary as it replaced something that was not evil. So, what to do?
The democratic government cannot defend continued relationship with him at any level in my view.
It is indefensible. As a person de Klerk is free to make any statement on any social issue. We guarantee freedom of speech. But in his position his denial he is spitting in our collective face. He has personally destroyed any basis for a relationship
with us as a nation. Finally, he is unrepentant because he should have apologised within 24Hrs of making that denial statement. Period.
