One like = One strange and mysterious thing you've noticed while going for a walk in your neighborhood
The jawbone of a deer, covered in moss. It looks like someone left it here.
A couple of kids, standing silently in their yard, staring up directly at the sun with mouths wide open.
A dandelion bursting through a crack in the pavement.
One of those spraypainted symbols on the sidewalk that indicate where piping is. But in this case, it seems to indicate something else...
Distant flute music, coming from the woods.
The buzzing of cicadas, filling the air with their hums and whirs. Your friend walking with you is gently picking them up off the ground and allowing them to crawl over her body.
A book written in a language you've never heard up, that has gotten trapped in a storm drain. It must have washed up during the flood.
The way your friend's hair catches the light. She takes your breath away.
A young man, playing the guitar by the bus stop, but no sound is coming from the guitar.
An old beat up van with some wizard art depicted on the side. It's pretty cool.
The ruins of an old structure, covered in graffiti and tangled in vines, half-hidden in the woods.
A quarter with two heads. Your friend pockets it before you can study it closely.
A large pool of water, left over from the flood, rapidly evaporating in the summer sun.
Someone small dressed all in white, with long ears like a rabbit. They have been following you for some time, hiding just out of sight among the trees and the bushes.
Your friend gets a text from someone, and she says it was nothing, but her whole demeanor suddenly changes. She keeps glancing behind her. You feel a pit in your stomach.
A cloud shaped like a great hare, moving across the brilliant blue sky.
A large tree branch that has broken an electrical wire, a remnant from the Flood. It still hangs over the road.
The old house on the hill, perched like an ancient bird overlooking your town. The road winding up to it is overgrown.
The way it feels when your friend takes your hand and runs with you down the hill, laughing and screaming the whole way.
The fresh smell of the soil after the rain.
A cat, hunting for fish washed up by the Flood, that appears to have taken a distinct, very forced, lack-of-interest in you. He's lingering around your legs while pretending that he doesn't care about you our your friend.
Damp footsteps on the dry pavement, where someone was walking barefoot. Next to where the footsteps start are a pair of beat-up muddy white sneakers.
The sensation of a brief sunshower. Both you and your friend feel a moment of panic, but before you can realize, it's gone again.
The miracle of a kiss shared between two friends who are happy to be alive.
A gift left by the small rabbit person hiding in the bushes. It appears to be a couple of animal ribs. Your friend takes them, and plans to make them into jewelry.
Two bus tickets, miraculously having survived the Flood. You joke about taking them and getting out of here, just going somewhere else and never coming back. Your friend laughs, but it doesn't feel like she's joking.
A small garden with a stone wall, nestled between two houses at the edge of town. When you climb over the wall, you see beautiful flowers inside.
A deflated basketball.
A group of kids playing baseball in the field. There's something about the way they move their bodies that gives your friend the creeps.
The knot in your stomach that keeps growing every time you glance over at your friend. Is she mad at you? Why do you feel like this?
A smashed-up bike.
An old woman sitting in a chair outside the local deli. She's smoking a cigar and mutters a curse as you and your friend walk by.
Your friend's older brother, who is hanging out with some of HIS friends on a rooftop. They shout out to you, and offer you some beer (which you politely refuse).
The road seems to wind and weave in directions it didn't used to.
A plane soars by overhead, leaving a thin white line among the clouds.
Your friend's boyfriend is driving by in his truck. He stops, and asks where you're both going. She tells him, nowhere particular, and you want to puke. He offers you both a ride but you keep walking.
A couple of frogs, hopping across the street, hunting for worms.
A smashed window of a local electronics store, broken in during the Flood. A TV lies on the ground, smashed.
The creek at the edge of town is almost past its banks, still full of brown water and churning with rage. The bridge is still soaked. Your friend tosses a coin into the water.
A barefoot teen, washing her feet in the water. Something about her behavior - the water in her short hair, her drenched t-shirt - feels baptismal.
A cool newt under a rock.
The sensation of clay on your hands when you ball it up in your palm. Your friend makes a comment about it being good for your skin.
The way your friend takes your hand as she helps you up the rocks, back onto the road. The clay from your hand mixes with the clay from her's, and you suddenly want to imagine the thousand different ways your hands can feel together.
A tangled mess of power lines and cables, stretched across the road. It takes a bit of hopping to navigate across the wires safely.
A siren going off from closer in the middle of town. Your friend pulls you into the bushes, to stay out of sight of any police.
The sensation of her body breathing next to your's, as the two of you sit in the gutter, and you realize you never want this moment to end.
The site of the sunset over the mountains.
The graveyard, already filling with inexpiable lights in the gloaming hours.
The distant croaking of a toad.
And above all, her.
