The age divide with Sanders' support has been stark, and the flareup over his Castro comments probably gets at why. To older voters who came of age in the Cold War era, he's a throwback to ideological politics that they remember as fringe and very unsuccessful in elections.
Younger voters, especially those under 30, have little or no first-hand memory of the Cold War. Their politics have been shaped by Iraq, Afghanistan, the great recession and Trump. Sanders' comments on Castro, the USSR , Ortega etc. just land totally differently with them

This is a John Chancellor NBC commentary from October 1988, near the end of the Cold War. The sense that capitalism was triumphing and that communism and socialism lay in ruins was rampant in America around this time:
