Are you familiar with the study of genre? I’m asking because this is where I think you’re making your biggest mistake...
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 Here’s an example... Genesis 1-3 contains two different creation myths that contain familiar Ancient Near Eastern motifs. The purpose isn’t to relay history, but rather a theological message about God and humanity.
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 If an author writes of fruit that symbolizes choice, or a snake that speaks, or a man whose name means “man,” or a woman whose name means “mother of life,” he’s doing everything he can think of to let you know he is writing myth...not history.
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 This is far from a perfect analogy, but many people today would say that Star Wars is an example of modern myth. The story is conveyed through Jedi, Wookiees, the Force, and other fantastical creatures. Would you label Star Wars “untrustworthy”?
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 If you did, you’d be missing the point of the whole thing. Star Wars uses the imagery of science fiction and fantasy to communicate deeper truths about the nature of reality.
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 So if you really think about it, Star Wars is true… This doesn’t mean that Star Wars is meant to be understood as history, even though it starts out, “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away...”
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 Star Wars is true in the sense that it communicates about good and evil, the idea that there is something greater than ourselves, sacrifice for our friends, etc. Myths help us understand things that are true about reality through the medium of story.
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 In the same way, the opening chapters of Genesis are meant to be read as myth. These texts were born out of the cultural milieu of the Ancient Near East and use ANE imagery to convey theological meaning.
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 If you actually bother to try to understand the texts within the context of their world, you’ll see that they were in fact revolutionary. The creation myths of the ANE established humankind as the slaves of the gods. The role of humanity was to be utterly subservient to the gods.
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 The creation myths in Genesis, on the other hand, declare that human beings are made in the image of God. Humanity holds a special place in the natural world...to be an image bearer of God.
@ATHE1STP0WER @RealityRevInc @doofgeek4011 @EmeryThrash @BrassWisdom @bibhistctxt @amateurexegete @amo_linguas @WriterJohnBuck @Lionheart213072 @SentinelApolog1 @HPerplexed @epichrist @GoatApologist @1SonuvaGunn @YoungbloodRay95 So your mockery of these ancient texts actually says way more about your ability (or rather lack of ability) to think critically, than about the texts themselves...
