Evergreen truths:
1. Risk mitigation is expensive until you need it, then it’s retroactively the cheapest option.

2. Another disaster is always coming.

3. Community drives resilience. Survive together or die alone.
I shouldn’t be surprised how many people are learning globalized supply chains are extremely vulnerable to disruption. But... this is how we designed it?

That’s literally the whole idea behind Just-In-Time economics. It’s what happens when maximizing profit is the only criteria.
Go ahead & stockpile.

If you pick non-perishables you enjoy, your Worst Case Scenario is feeling a bit foolish but having supplies next blackout / severe storm / quake / income disruption. Oh no, the horror?

Pandemic isn’t my motivation of choice, but I’ll take what I can get.
Please listen to public health folks about Best Practices.

Washing hands more & avoiding touching your face is effective at reducing transmission. It’s free, so literally Worst Case Scenario is developing healthier hygiene habits that reduce your risk for more mundane illness.
While normally I’d encourage throwing a party to boost community ties & strengthen resilience, that’s not a great idea for the current scenario.

But community isn’t just irl interactions. This whole platform is a social gathering of pocket friends. So how do we virtually party?
Yesterday was a distributed dance party of a beleaguered CDC critiquing song lyrics. I’m sure someone is hosting a Snarky Epidemics Movie Night somewhere.

Share the good times to strengthen bonds for the bad. Worst Case Scenario is you have fun.
If we strengthen those community bonds enough, if we practice compassion & empathy for people beyond our daily circles, if we keep reaching out...

Maybe we’ll remember profits aren’t the only criteria of success.

And maybe we’re start shifting our priorities to something more.
Resilience is a perpetual process, an active choice to do better & make next time less bad. Science gives us the tools to build any future we want.

Another disaster is always coming, but we can pick how we prepare & respond.

We have the choice to survive together or die alone.
