#Climatechange, combined with continued development and urbanization in some areas, has increased the risk of 𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐯𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 in much of #Europe; and, despite extensive efforts to reduce the #risk, #flood impacts have increased in recent decades. Image
The climate crisis makes it increasingly urgent and necessary to put #adaptation strategies, as well as #mitigation, at the center of policies.
So what type of adaptation? How can we, in the face of different risks, identify the most effective #strategies?
A new study in @NatureClimate, co-authored by our Francesco Dottori and Lorenzo Alfieri, focuses on river flooding: simulating different types of interventions, they present a cost-benefit analysis to identify the best strategies for limiting land vulnerability to #flood #risk. Image

I think this is an interesting article, mainly because it discusses battlefield learning and #adaptation in #Ukraine. There are many skills needed by military institutions to be successful in combat. But fostering a learning culture is vital. 1/15

The uncertainty inherent in military operations is part of the enduring nature of war. It is impossible for a military institution to anticipate everything. Therefore, a key virtue for military organizations in war must be adaptability. Adaptation in #Ukraine - an update 1/25 🧵
2/ As @DWBarno76 & @norabensahel have written, “even if militaries do imagine the next war accurately, the opening battles often unfold in spectacularly unexpected ways—with even well-trained armies often taken by surprise.”
3/ Belligerents constantly seek ways to outthink & out fight the other side. New technologies are introduced, new tactics developed & new organisations are introduced to exploit new ideas and technologies.

2/18. 📢GOOD NEWS: #COP27 has established a #LossAndDamage fund! Following courageous and consistent championing for 30+ years by countries on the frontlines of the #ClimateCrisis. This is a historic moment that sets us on a pathway to #ClimateJustice.
3/18. During this time, climate-vulnerable countries were supported by the tireless efforts of #CivilSociety who have and will continue to demand that polluters #PayUp4LossAndDamage. We’ve put our heart and soul into this for decades now and we are not stopping anytime soon!

.#COP27 will end in hours/days🤔and the new cover text draft did reduce in length.
BUT what we cannot accept is the continued exclusion of priorities of vulnerable countries and the backsliding on the Glasgow Pact - this process must always be moving us forward!
CAN’s reaction⬇️
2/9
The #COP27 Cover Decision must include language on the equitable phase-out of ALL fossil fuels - coal, oil, AND gas.
A huge number of countries demanded this and the Egyptian Presidency must stop ignoring it.
3/9
Parties must avoid using qualifiers and loopholes such as “(un)abated”, “rationalize”, “inefficient”, “low carbon”, and “diversification of energy” which weaken commitments to the phasing-out of #FossilFuels and fossil fuel subsidies in the cover decision.

1/7 🧵
We’re well into week 2 of #COP27 and the draft cover text has finally dropped: a record-long (8.400 words) COP27 cover decision draft text 36 hours before the official end of COP27. This text lacks a clear structure and vision.

Initial CAN reaction below ⬇️
2/7 Lack of transparency, and progress in the different negotiations is leading to the undermining of a meaningful outcome. It is the responsibility of the Egyptian presidency to urgently start accelerating the work and show leadership for an ambitious cover decision.
3/7 The #COP27 cover decision must not backslide, but rather demonstrate progress from the Glasgow text on #1o5C and ALL fossil fuels.

🔗lossanddamagecollaboration.org/pages/unpackin… Image
2/13. The phrase “mosaic of solutions” was first used by the #Maldives —one of the nations most vulnerable to the impacts of the #ClimateCrisis— in September to capture the need to mobilise action and support on all fronts to address #LossAndDamage that is happening now.
3/13. However, in the #LossAndDamage Finance negotiations at #COP27 the term has been used by developed countries to stress the need to focus on solutions outside the @UNFCCC such as the #GlobalShield Against Climate Risk.

2/18. On the 20th of September, #Denmark🇩🇰 pledged €13m for #LossAndDamage, a package which includes finance for the #GlobalShield Against Climate Risk, support for CSOs to do projects on the ground, and some other money that is yet to be allocated for a specific use.
3/18. Crucially, all of this money is new and on top of #Denmark’s 🇩🇰 0.7% commitment to ODA, therefore not a diversion of cash from other vital #ClimateFinance projects.

#PolicyBrief | When will a 2-metre rise in #SeaLevel occur, and how might we #adapt?

Read this joint policy-brief published by @CoCliCoServices @SCORE_EUproject and @ProtectSlr
👉protect-slr.eu/policy-briefs/

Key messages in this thread 🧵
A 2-metre rise in #SeaLevel is almost inevitable. The uncertainty is on the timing, somewhere between one century and the next two thousand years. Exceeding 2 meters of sea-level rise will fundamentally change #European #coastal zones.
Europe and National States can recognize that coastal #adaptation is an ongoing process that involves short-term actions, long-term planning and strategic thinking.

🚨Paper Alert🚨

Marine protected areas #MPAs are increasingly promoted as #ocean-based #solution to #ClimateChange, but their contribution to climate change #adaptation and #mitigation remains contentious. Our meta-analysis of 22,403 papers brings clarity. Link below.

🙈Spoiler alert🙉

#FullyProtected #MPAs can can significantly enhance:

©️ carbon sequestration
🌊 coastal protection
🐟 biodiversity
🐡 reproductive capacity of marine organisms
🎣 fishers’ catch
💰 fishers’ income

@verodigiorgio at #CodemotionMilan22 answering the question on how to grow professionally (as software architect for her, but it’s the same for all paths in #softaredevelopment). Let’s discuss about it in this thread 🧵 👇🏻
Let me introduce the thread saying that the talk by @verodigiorgio at #CodemotionMilan22 about #gitops was very helpful and rich of content and points of inspiration. Surely something to try in every day company business to improve our products, developer and customer experience.
Next, going straight to the point what @verodigiorgio says here is that #curiosity and the ability to face our ideas with other #developers (or more generally other colleagues in the business having another point of view) are fundamentals point for growth and success.

Today @ClimateInstit released a major report on the costs of #climatechange to Canada's economy. In a nutshell, climate change is a major drag on the 🇨🇦 economy and makes life less affordable for people. 1/ climateinstitute.ca/reports/damage…
Far from being a climate winner, we find that our economy is highly sensitive to #climatechange and the costs are wide-ranging. Climate impacts will hurt almost every sector, slowing growth, reducing productivity, and resulting in job losses 2/
#climatechange will hit households hard, making life even less affordable. Incomes decline, the price of everyday items rises as supply chains are disrupted, and govt taxes must increase to pay for higher climate damages. But this future is not inevitable 3/

Dear @ClimateEnvoy @JohnKerry,

Here's my 10-point response to your intervention at the @nytimes Climate Forward conference at #UNGA

1. Thank you for acknowledging that #LossAndDamageFinance requires trillions of US$, as experts estimated.

THREAD - 1/6

2. You now agree "in all honesty" that the most important thing to do is to mitigate to prevent #LossAndDamage, and the next most important thing is to help people adapt.

3. But, the graph clearly shows that the US failed to reduce its CO2 emissions, since @UNFCCC in 1992.

2/6 Image
4. US gave 1 of US$3b of #ClimateFinance committed to @theGCF for #mitigation & #adaptation - nowhere close to its fair share.

5. Since 2013, I've seen the US blocking every single discussion on #LossAndDamageFinance, by arm-twisting and threatening developing nations.

It is impossible for a #military institution to anticipate every eventuality in war. There are too many scenarios to accurately predict pre-war and wartime events. Adaptation is vital, and we have seen it throughout the war in #Ukraine. 1/25 🧵
2/ Because of this, a key virtue for military organizations in war must be a learning culture and an adaptability to unexpected events, as described in my recent @EngelsbergIdeas article. engelsbergideas.com/essays/how-ukr…
3/ The exploration of adaptation has resulted in the development of concepts that underpin understanding of how adaptation occurs and how it can be applied. In military literature, the best-known adaptive cycle is Colonel John Boyd’s OODA (observe-orient-decide-act) loop.
