When we remember the #SelmaMarch, we often think of Dr. King’s legacy, but many women played instrumental roles in the fight to pass the #VotingRightsAct and their histories are intimately linked to Selma. Today for #WomensHistoryMonth, we’re reflecting on their legacies. Image
Amelia Boynton Robinson was one of the organizers of the #SelmaMarch. While marching, she was knocked unconscious by a state trooper. For decades, she spent time teaching people to read and registering voters. She became the first Black woman to register to vote in Selma. Image
Known as the “Mother of the Voting Rights Movement,” Marie Foster spent an immense amount of time teaching the community how to pass the literacy tests that barred them from voting. She was also one of the local organizers of the march & was severely beaten by state troopers. Image
One of the founding members of SNCC, Diane Nash made a name for herself as a Freedom Rider and organizing lunch counter sit-ins. She worked with Amelia and Marie to plan the Selma March and saved dozens of lives by sending for medical help on #BloodySunday. Image
In 1965, Annie Lee Cooper stood for hours outside the Dallas County Courthouse to register to vote. The Sheriff asked her to leave and then preceded to prod her in the neck with a billy club. Annie hit the sheriff & was arrested. After the incident, she became a registered voter. Image
After seeing the pictures of #BloodySunday in the news, Viola Liuozzo was spurned to action and joined the SCLC and participated in the third attempt of the Selma March. While shuttling marchers from Selma, a Klansmen saw a black man in her car and fired directly at her. Image
