This turned out to be the case. Black voters in South Carolina were Biden's firewall.
If Biden is the eventual Dem nominee, he will be the first nominee from either to party who didn't finish 1st or 2nd in Iowa or New Hampshire.

South Carolina has become the most important primary.

Obama's victory in SC (2008) propelled him to the nomination and Trump's victory there in SC did the same for Trump.
It's the nature of southern politics that white "Jacksonians" (to borrow Michael Barone's phrase) and black voters will each coalesce behind their preferred candidate quickly.

Perhaps this is normal in bi-racial communities or perhaps it's particular to the American South.

I dunno.

I just know that's the way it works.
The question going forward is Bernie too much of an idealist to face this reality.

He has no chance of cutting into Biden's black support.

He must go "all in" on every other Democratic voting block or he's going lose the delegate battle.

Groundswell are a group of conservative activists, headed by Ginni Thomas (wife of Clarence Thomas), who meet at the DC offices of Judicial Watch.
Apparently Ledeen wrote a memo that was instrumental in torpedoing Jessie Liu's promotion.

Pastor Poju Oyemade preached a message at the crossover service of 2009/2010 about changing the direction of your life and made a brilliant allusion that has been on my mind in observing the Bernie Sanders campaign flounder.

I think this particular lesson is worth sharing.
Many things went terribly wrong with Sanders campaign but the most astounding for me is the sheer inability of the campaign to change course when problems were sighted and that Poju message dealt with that on a personal level - so this is political but has personal lessons.
Political campaigns generally have two major problems:

1) Campaign is blind to incoming problems, usually because the rank and file are too optimistic or

2) The campaign sights incoming problems but is unable to adapt to them, and this second problem for me is the worst.

Tom Nichols has magically stumbled into figuring it out. It's a miracle.
Reminder - Tom Nichols took credit for the work of Jim Clyburn and black voters in South Carolina by asserting it was his tweets that got Biden the win and not him.. But sure.

Biden beats all Dems in black support. Even Trump gets more black support than Buttigieg does, whose fluency in Norwegian won’t sway 32 million Hispanic voters. 41 million people in US speak Spanish. Of the dozen+ 2020 POTUS candidates, only Julian Castro speaks fluent Spanish.
2. Buttigieg’s support among black voters in South Carolina is between 0%-1% percent (not a typo), despite his campaign having spent millions of dollars. In 2016, black voters made up nearly a quarter of the Democratic primary electorate. That number is expected to grow in 2020.
3. Buttigieg does better among evangelical voters (esp in Iowa) and those who favor an extended US military presence in the Middle East (some evangelicals see this as key to converting more Muslims there). Meanwhile, Biden continues to build on his lead.
