What is a virus?

So viruses are pieces of RNA (COVID-19) or DNA and typically a protein housing that helps it invade your cells.

Because they do not have cells they are not alive. So when folks say ot will “kill” a virus they are usually talking about damaging that protein.
1/
..So anyone who has tried to get blood or food out of clothing knows that soap or shampoo work best. This is because the soap denatures (causes the protein to unfold) and thus loose its functionality.

For a virus to “infect” you it first has to land on you and attach to you.
2/
Even if it lands on you COVID-19 will not be able to do anything until it can invade one of your cells!

Since viruses do not have cells they need to use your cells to replicate enough to make you sick.

How can you stop it from invading your cells??
3/
Respiratory droplets can be on you (if you were near someone who coughed or sneezed!)

In that case the best strategy is to shower asap, shampooing your hair and using lots of soap.(Note:Put your exposed clothes in the washer before the shower!) Then change into fresh clothes.
4/
If you cannot shower then wash your face and hands and change clothes.

Also if you have hair that can fall in your face you may want to pull it back until you can shower!

If you are not near anyone who sneezes then lower your risk of exposure by not touching common surfaces!
5/
Because COVID-19 is an enveloped virus it has a membrane coating around the protein shell!

That envelope comes from the cells that replecated the virus. So the membrane is made up of phospholipids.

So 70% alcohol (about the amount in most hand sanitizers) will disrupt...
6/
..the envelope after 30 - 60 seconds leaving the virus unable to invade your cells!

As a vegan I frequent Chinese restaurants regularly. It is a falsehood to think because we heard about this virus in China that all asian people are contageous.

They are not. This virus is.
7/
...blind to race! Also remember that plenty of caucasian business persons travel to China!

Let’s practice embracing diversity that we tweet about reminding all that it makes us stronger!

8/
What should I do if I have symptoms?

It is estimated that at least 80% of the folks who become infected have only mild symptoms.

If you only have mild symptoms you can often manage your symptoms at home.

Rushing to a providers office or going to a clinic or hospital can...
9/
... be exposed to a more serious illness in the waiting room!

But if you have trouble breathing, your fever is over 100.4 or you are immunocompromised or are already ill (diabetes, COPD, etc) then it is very important to check in with your health care provider as soon as...
10/
...you become symptomatic!

If you are immunocompromised (autoimmune diseases, transplant patients &/or cancer patients) you may want to discuss whether your medication needs to be adjusted if COVID-19 is in your area!

Additionally older folks are at a higher risk! Thus..
11/
...they too should consult with their health care provider if they become symptomatic!

The trick with viruses is to catch them early when the viral count is low! It is far easier to stop 100 than 10,000.

Because they grow exponentially, one more day can make a big difference!
Let’s all focus on staying healthy because we have to stop another kind of parasite that invaded our democracy!

This election is our only chance to give ourselves a blue House, Senate and White House!

Then sick people can see a provider as needed and receive preventive care!
